Today we’d like to introduce you to Jed Laplant
Hi Jed, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In the wake of my wife and I getting married and working several jobs to pull off buying my old family home, we came upon a “now or never moment” to choose making music as a lifestyle when my back broke. We were at a bit of a crossroads which helped sparked the decision to start over and do the thing we knew we’d regret not going for. That was back in the winter of 2020/2021 and we’ve been giving this Wild Horses thing our all ever since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s a tough life hitting the road and rolling the dice to see if you can fill the gas tank for the next gig. While it’s a risk, there’s few things that’ll make you feel more alive. We’ve blown tires on mountain sides, fought breakdowns around the country, faced nights where we put our all into these songs only to have three people show up, nights without sleep, trying to make it to the next town, and figuring out how to scrape together enough cash to make the next record. So far it’s been well worth every bit of resistance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We started this band called Wild Horses to connect with people. The songs we write come from our lived experience and the reason we do it is to hit the road and meet people along the way we get to return to. We like the music we make and all that but maybe that’s the thing that is a little different in our approach.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We love Grand Rapids because it sits beautifully in the woods of northern MN. It’s just the right size where we have breweries and art galleries but small enough where running into the grocery store takes an hour because you know everyone. We don’t have a Chipotle yet so I guess there’s always something to be improved.
