Check Out Jessica Winnie’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Winnie.

Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
We started our collective in May of 2020 with a mission to serve as a platform to highlight and promote Black business. Our curated monthly boxes are limited as we are not a subscription box. MN Black Box drops on the first of every month. Our hope is that you try out some new products, leave reviews for those businesses and shop again in the future directly with those companies.

To date we have been able to financially support and build up over 150 Black businesses.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been one of uplifting, servitude and commitment. “I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”

Robert Frost explained it best. MN Black Box journey has been amazing thus far. Our intentions and mission are unique.

Of course there have been struggles; missing packages, broken items, miscommunication with vendors and at times inventory waiting to find a home. Every rough road has been a learning experience. The best part is resolving with our guests and continuing to build together.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am also a poet. Thankful to have found a love for writing at the age of 12. Everything I Am is a book of poems, illustrations and even a space for the reader to reflect. Self-published in 2018. I am known for healing through my unspokenwords; a poetic voice for humanity. I am most proud of my six children

(Ishmael, Idreis, Inayah, Ibrahim, Isa and Inara). These young people motivate me daily to create and share my gifts.

One thing that sets me apart from others is my willingness to serve. My grandparents Hank & Dottie Garwick were excellent examples on how to give back and support others.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is traveling to India. I lived there for 3 months and helped Nancy Ramer (Adji) retire. I can still close my eyes and see the landscape, school yard and open markets. Everyone wanted to put bangles on my wrists.
