Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanie Taylor
Hi Joanie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always said, I was born and raised in Minnesota, but I grew up in LA. I fell in love with hair at an early age. From learning how to braid on Barbies to doing my family and friends’ hair. In 2007, I moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue my passion for hair after two years at university at MNSU. I trained at Paul Mitchell in Orange County and had the opportunity to work with top celebrity hairdressers. In 2010, I joined Drybar, where I advanced from stylist to Training Manager, running the West Coast’s top shop. In 2018, I was relocated with Drybar to New York to manage their highest-grossing store. It was during my time working as Training manager where I discovered a passion for business operations and leadership. After leaving Drybar in 2021, I freelanced at a Salon in SoHo, worked weddings, and helped open Madison Reed’s second Upper Eastside location. In the Summer of 2023, I returned to Drybar and moved my family back to my home state of Minnesota to support the market here as the Area Manager. I also continue to freelance and am a part-time stylist doing hair color at Salon Abe in Northeast Minneapolis. Over the past 15 years, I’ve styled hair (and done Makeup) for photoshoots, red carpets, TV/film, and worked with many celebrity and high profile clientele. My passion will always be styling and coloring hair and I look forward to the years ahead as I continue nurturing my skills and grow my career in the Minneapolis Area.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road from where I started to where I am now, has not always been well-paved. I’ve had (and lost) plenty of opportunities. The TV and Film industry is piled high with pilot and film almosts, because, as you can guess, Hollywood is cut-throat. I had to learn how to adapt, pivot, and gained a tough skin. As a leader, I had to learn how to talk to different people, not be so direct in my approach, and how to build relationships. I’m an extroverted introvert so small talk has never been easy for me. I’ve also had to work harder in the full-service salon environment since I spent so much of my time as a manager or as a freelance stylist. I will always continue to look for ways to grow and improve my leadership, communication, and styling/coloring technical skills.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have over 15 years of experience behind the chair. I’ve styled hair for many celebrities from Amal Clooney (who I worked with for 6 years between LA and NYC), to Jennifer Love Hewitt, Emma Roberts, Bryce Dallas Howard, Leann Rimes, and Busy Phillips (to name a few). I specialize in Blowouts & styling, Event/Red carpet looks, & Wedding styling. I also specialize in color-from gray coverage to hand-painted highlights. I do freelance makeup, event styling/planning, and creative directing. I love designing and creating themes and concepts for photoshoots and events! It is a secret passion of mine!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love a good collaboration! From photoshoots, events, or on-set work, to pop-ups and mixers– I’m always open for it! The best way to support is to come sit in my chair or collab on a photo shoot! As an Area Manager for Drybar we are available for pop-ups and on-site styling. I am always looking for ways to connect with people and build a strong network and client-base by partnering with other brands and our local neighboring businesses so we can all support and grow together!
