Check Out José Barriga’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to José Barriga.

Hi José, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in the Bolivian Andes, in the city of La Paz to be precise. Since a young age, I was very involved with different groups,  whether dancing or volunteering or playing sports. Shortly after moving to the midwest and while attending Minnesota State University, Mankato, I got involved with “The Maverick,” a community radio station where I worked as a news reporter and coordinated different programs for a few years. In 2012, I started my own radio show, Clandestino Radio, as an opportunity to share the arts and cultures I experience every day.

One of my passions is meeting people and learning from them. Since starting the show, I got the opportunity to meet community leaders from around the world, ranging from poet laureates to visual artists and music producers. Most importantly, I got to share their work with a global audience.

Through the years, Clandestino Radio grew into a global community with followers in over 100 countries. We also partnered up with universities for the participation of student interns, who provided input in the development of the show and its digital presence.

Additionally, Clandestino Radio serves as an educational platform not only to learn music, history, but also the variety of languages and cultures represented, which keep growing. The growing audience includes bilingual people, as well as those who desire to learn either English or Spanish.

While still conducting and directing the show, I continue to participate in the community, teaching language courses, hosting dances as a DJ, or reffing volleyball games.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our society is constantly changing, so it’s important to be able to adapt to the ways people interact with each other and consume information, which ultimately shapes the way we view the world.

There are always challenges when there are goals. I think one of the most valuable aspects of being an entrepreneur is adapting to change and learning how to identify opportunities within the frame of change.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Beyond entertaining, I like to share the education I received, therefore, I like to interview artists and community leaders in order to inspire and entertain people.

Whether talking to musicians, mayors, or travelers, I have learned so much conducting my show’s interviews. I also strive to present my content in a creative and appealing way to different audiences.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I also play music, ski, and can speak, read and write in Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and English, currently learning Greek and Ukrainian.
