Today we’d like to introduce you to KT Branscom.
Hi KT, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hey! I’m KT from VIAL and here’s a bit about us!
Taylor (she/they), our keytarist, came back from a show one evening, feeling like there was something lacking in the local scene. She brought on Kate (they/them) and I (they/them) whom she knew from after school music lessons to play bass and guitar respectively for a new band they were going to start. One Tinder account later and we found Katie (she/they), our drummer.
We started off by playing opening spots on local house shows and trying to build relationships with other bands in the scene. We released our first ep/album, Grow Up, very quickly after forming so that we had something out for folks to listen to. Our lead single, Rough, off of that album did pretty well on Spotify and we started gaining a following. We were so excited that people enjoyed our music not only in the local scene, but all over the country and even the world. We planned a small tour with about five shows, but that got stopped by Covid before we could go.
Over the course of the pandemic we started making Tiktoks which expanded our audience even more. In July of this year we released our sophomore album, LOUDMOUTH, which was so much fun to write and record and which people seemed to really enjoy! As shows slowly started to come back and things started opening up again, we started playing bigger shows in bigger venues such as the Fine Line and 7th Street Entry and we recently just played our first headlining show!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Being a band filled with all non-men, we get plenty of people who don’t take us seriously and who like to push us down. We often had the issue of being the token “girl band” who opened for everyone else. We try and stand up for ourselves with things such as songwriting, but it does take a toll.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are an indie/punk band named VIAL known for our upbeat and fun songs. I’m most proud of our sophomore album, LOUDMOUTH. We have a sound unlike any you’ve heard before and we throw a killer live show.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think that we have to take a lot of risks. we’re a completely non-male band, and we write music that celebrates that while also calling out the scene’s misogyny. Luckily we have a really great audience who amplifies that message with us.
