Check Out Mackenzie Dickinson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Dickinson.

Mackenzie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like most, my photography journey began when I got my first DSLR in college and began taking pictures of landscapes, flowers, and other interesting subjects I found. Later, my mom started requesting photos of my niece, her granddaughter because I had “the nice camera”, of course, I obliged, and thus, an artist’s journey had begun. I received all the usual encouragement of “You could make money doing this!” and slowly began exposing myself to new subjects, equipment, locations, and styles in an effort to begin my business.

During my time in college, ironically, I wasn’t studying photography, but rather graphic design, which I worked in for many years after graduating. Using my background and knowledge in design, printing, and custom framing, I’m able to provide my clients with a unique experience that not many have. It takes an eye for detail and a special talent to see things from a slightly different perspective than a designer. I’m grateful I’m in a position to help my clients with their prints, albums, and other wall art, and confident they’re getting expert guidance from someone with lots of industry knowledge.

Several years later, I’m still growing, learning, and always trying to push the boundaries of what I can do.

Being a shy person naturally, it can take a lot of energy and confidence to put yourself out there. I’m sure many of you can relate. Lately, I’ve been working hard to grow more in the wedding and film industries.

Some of my current interests include audio, lighting, and fine art studio photography. I hope to gain more wedding and film clients to eventually do what I love full-time one day, and maybe if I’m lucky, turn my one-woman operation into an even bigger business, helping, training, and employing others along the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many small business owners out there, you do everything. Literally. I heard a saying somewhere that when you run a small business, something goes wrong every single day. After a while, I’ve learned that this is just part of the process, but it always gets easier.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Kind of like what I mentioned in the summary, my background isn’t really in photography. I’ve learned a lot about photography through other methods of art that I did previously. Graphic design, printing, custom framing. I’ve been drawing since I was in grade school and always had a talent for art. Whether it be drawing, painting, or arts and crafts.

I would say the most unique thing about and probably what I’m most proud of is my skill and experience in color theory. I’m able to match color mixes easily and with incredible accuracy. Kind of a neat factoid.

I would say right now, I’m working to photograph/film weddings and seniors primarily. I only do families occasionally, sports, headshots, and all sorts of photography but my true passion is fine art studio photography. Maybe one day.

What matters most to you? Why?
Professionally – my reputation. It’s how you new get clients, repeat clients, maintain a quality standard, and ensure trust, and expertise among your clients. It’s everything.
