Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice.
Hi Maurice, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was always fascinated with the human body and the concept of having to live and walk around in this goofy machine almost as a separate entity of ourselves was equally fascinating and terrifying.
Played sports to explore those ideas and feed that curiosity. Sports was the tool that helped me determine what I wanted to study in college. Had a full athletic scholarship to play football at the University of Minnesota as I majored in kinesiology and studied the movement of the human body.
Once I graduated it was years of bouncing around from different gyms trying to learn both the application side of health and fitness as well as the business side.
Paid the bills working for other people in the fitness industry until around 2014 when I started my own independent personal training business until 2019 where I linked up with my business partner and brother Daleco James and we opened Wurk, which we currently own and operate together today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not smooth at all and thankfully so. We (Daleco and I) have learned so much about ourselves and each other through our struggles of owning and running a business. Much of it is just getting to know each other and how you communicate with one another and you grow as people.
We’re in a overly saturated business/market and there’s this almost charade to differentiate ourselves from others for a service and a belief that we as a society should hope would come naturally and not as complicated as we’re making it for the sake of money. We desperately want people to be able to confidently take care of themselves through exercise under their own thinking and volition.
As fitness has become a global phenomenon in its integration of damn near everything and it’s presentation on social media platforms, the antics used to get views and likes would love to further us from our original purpose.
The struggle is to not lose ourselves or our values by not submitting to the need to reinvent the wheel in the empty narcissistic pursuit of being known over encouraging the simplistic execution of the main pilar in our existence of keeping us humans here and vitally available.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We train. Thankfully in the grand scheme
of the greater good we don’t need to specialize in anything when it comes to the human body. It’s just not necessary and hopefully it stays that way. I hope we’re not know for anything. In this greedy egotistical game of business we value the freedom of nothing and the pain and struggle that comes with that to teach us about ourselves and help pave our own way in this nonsense. We as people are lucky and fortunate if our health isn’t anything to talk about and is something that just is and doesn’t bother or become a burden to us.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see it crashing. People keep pushing the envelope when it’s comes to the human body and much of it is in desperation to become famous or known by doing very little work. Most of our influencers in this industry are models and have no education about the human body and not only push the unrealistic image but the lifestyle and scheudle that goes with it. It’s easy to see the tactic in that because you don’t want people to believe that the majority of the body’s that make up the majority of the advertisement are unobtainable and unmanageable physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially because that dance keeps the money rolling in. When we don’t see how lucky we are as a species as it pertains to taking care of ourselves and how easy it truly can be to execute our vitality over a lifespan when we stop chasing and looking for advice from others who are running a business we blindly are lead by dopamine and euphoria and not the boring lottery ticket that is sustaining life that right now isn’t currently going well considering what’s being sacrificed in the process.
