Check Out Megan Moore’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Moore.

Megan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a painter. I have done murals, illustrations, and private and grant-funding commissions, and always enjoy working on my own ideas as well. I studied Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design and moved to Minneapolis after graduating in 2002. I joined a group studio in the Northrup King Building in 2003, and have been there ever since. I started my work as an artist focused on illustrating and exhibiting in art fairs.

As my reputation as a local artist grew, I had the opportunity to do public art in the form of murals and utility box wraps, and inquiries for larger commissions. I received two commissioned projects in the fall of 2020 that opened my eyes to the value of my work. At that time I had been painting for long enough that I could look back and see where my path had taken me, and the most meaningful project and clients I have had are those in which my artwork supports wellness.

My work can be seen in several clinical settings around the twin cities, including Washburn Center for Children, Regions Hospital, and Hennepin County Medical Center among others. I have also worked with many clients to create artwork to celebrate a birth or marriage, or to commemorate a loved one who has passed away. My work in the form of murals offers the same wellness support to the communities where they are located.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Making a career out of art does not come easily. I don’t think I even believed I could do it after earning my BFA. But I always had the support of family and friends, and I have been motivated to stick with what I love and keep trying new ways to earn a living as an artist.

For me, it is more than a career. It is how I want to live and what I want to contribute to the world. I understand the path that I am on better now that I am 20 years in, but I still can’t predict what the next 5 years will be like.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a painter. I most often use oil paints but also use watercolor, acrylic, and even house paint (beyond mural painting, where that is the standard medium). My subject matter is almost always nature-inspired, be it a landscape, a still life, or something in between.

I find it a little bit hard to characterize my work succinctly, and I think that is because of the variety of approaches and individualistic styles I employ. I am not trying to fit into one specific genre. I am most proud when I hear that my art has been an important part of someone’s life, in large or small ways.

Any big plans?
I want to stay focused on creating work and being open to opportunities for it to play a role in the lives of others. I am no longer doing many art fairs, where I mostly sold reproductions of my paintings. I have started to outsource the making and selling of prints, as I want to continue being focused on the creative process, working in my studio, and collaborating with partners to spread joy and wellness through art.

I will be looking for opportunities to exhibit my work in art centers and galleries, and for artist residencies where I can immerse myself in the meaning and making of art.
