Check Out Melody Vang-Jilka’s Story

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Melody Vang-Jilka.

Melody Vang-Jilka

Hi Melody, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
At a young age, my family frequently documented our lives using camcorders and cameras, and my siblings and I would make hilarious comedy skits to pass the time by.

Growing up in an artsy and creative family, we always had different interests and talents, and that inspired me to continue exploring even as an adult. I eventually picked up photography as a hobby in high school and began to take it more seriously in college; this was where I was able to explore and ultimately got hooked on taking photos more frequently.

During this time, my interest and passion for creative and styled photo shoots continued to expand, and shortly after, I became the photographer for the Inclusion and Diversity Department at my university, where I had the opportunity to photograph numerous events and phenomenal social and civil rights activist guest speakers. I was featured in my university’s Art Magazine, Satori, for three consecutive years, and during the last year of my undergrad, my work was chosen to be on the front page of Satori.

Photography, to me, is creating art, and I believe in not limiting myself to one style of work. I believe that every person, couple, family, and brand has its own story, vision, and feeling. With ten years of dedication to this craft and six years of professional work, I have found so much passion and fun through crafting visual stories and using photography as my canvas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The beginning of my photography journey was challenging, from dealing with imposter syndrome to having the means to even purchase a camera, equipment, softwares, etc., to do freelance photography.

Photography has pushed me to believe in my work and to acknowledge that I am great at what I do. However, it has not been an easy journey, my drive and passion to capture beautiful moments and create fuels me to keep doing what I love.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in lifestyle (portrait, couple, family, maternity, boudoir, etc.), wedding, events, and branding photography. My style of work is known for its versatility and diversity. I believe in collaborating with clients and making them feel comfortable, seen, and heard.

Alright, before we go, can you talk to us about how people can work, collaborate, or support you?
People can support me as a photographer by following my work on social media, referring me to others, providing constructive feedback, and hiring me for photography services.
