Check Out Nitty Zulu’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nitty Zulu.

Hi Nitty, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Nitty Zulu was born July 30,1982 in St. Elizabeth Jamaica. A country side that has strong communities. As far as I can remember after hearing reggae for the first time I was in love with the art form.  I would sing songs while with my friends and climbing fruit trees filling my belly was one of fondest memories as a child.the age of five while visiting my father in Kendal Manchester I was exposed to the art form dancehall at the community centre. I was heavily influenced by the artist Super Cat from that point I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

I attended Kendal All Age school and during lunchtime I would sing my favorite artists songs.  I migrated from Jamaica to Los Angeles California in 1990, to live with parents in the 60th street section of Crenshaw District . While attending church at a young age I became a drummer for my community church which broadened my love for music. I became a writer after that and wrote my first song at the age of fifteen called 6 O’Clock.  Many songs followed with no titles but my love for writing was passionate. I attended Crenshaw High School in California with my best friend Tre’ Woods and the late great Nipsy Hussle. I was highly influenced by rap and R&B which changed the way I wrote dancehall songs.,In 2002,  I recorded my first song, Take Off Florence featuring Scatter Brain and Razae.

I returned to Jamaica in 2007 and recorded my first song in Christiana Manchester, I Got The Energy which was not released due to non production rights that being said I started working with producers like SK-Spengshell. All of this started at Block S studio in Savoy Christiana where I collaborated with Dada Flex and Nesta. While studying the art form of dancehall I was introduced to Pink Panta who made me a part of his label 5 Star Camp. While being associated with 5 Star I recorded a few songs but most notable is Dem Thief Mi song.  Pink Panta said this was a good start but I needed to grow.

About 2011, I was inspired by the vibes in Christiana giving me that full up energy attitude which would display on the shows that Pink Panta would get the 5 Star Camp booked. I would open up shows headlined by the likes of Tommy Lee Sparta, Busy Signal, Romain Virgo and I-Octane. It took time to master my craft and style.

In 2018,  I recorded Pressure produced by KevAllen and Wheelin produced by Budja records.  Both songs as well as the my video for Wheelin directed by KingSimeondigreat which will be released 11Sep2020.

At this time of my life I found my true musical style and pattern.  The information that I grasped from my ancestors of the Akantribe from Africa I established my identity.

Life is not perfect due to my environment and also my bad decisions in life.  Through my music I inspire to bring a positive light to the world we live in.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In life when you have a talent, it’s a transition to make it a business or make it into business, in every business, you need capital to market, so although I wanted to put my all in music I could not due to the fact I had to work a 9 to 5 to maintain life and also be a father so it was a struggle v to stay focus on music so I have had some bad. Years not getting to give it the attention needed to flourish

And some times I was my biggest obstacle was my drive, aggression and just not maturing at the speed I should have.

I loved street life and it got the best of me most of the time and taught me some valuable life lessons about honoring life and being thankful.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a fusion Artist because of my diverse cultural background and also living life in different cultures has had a large effect on me.. what this did to me was makes me mix music and ideas because I have cultures and feelings to compare. Proud of me for not giving up.

Any big plans?
My biggest plan is to own and run my music label Akan Tribe Records and also be a great father, this all ties in with helping kids.
