Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige King.
Paige, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My interest in photography began in the dark room of my high school art department, which was much longer ago than I would like to admit. I went to college, followed my heart to Montana and left the dream of being a creative behind as I attained my Bachelors of Science in nursing. I bought my first DSLR camera as an aspiring food blogger (which makes me chuckle today) and slowly taught myself the principles of photography. My food blog faded (thank god!) and friends began to ask me to photograph them. I was working my dream job as a NICU nurse and feeling fulfilled in my career, but still felt there was a piece missing. I never intended to create a business, but my love for photography and capturing moments just continued to grow. My husband and I made the decision to move our family back to Minnesota and in doing so I lost the majority of my photo clients. I decided to put photography on the back burner as I had two young children and was uprooting my entire life. We moved across the country with a 4-year-old, 4-month-old, 2 cats and a dog and I started a new job in a local NICU. Photography was the furthest thing from my mind. In fact, I distinctly remember telling a very talented fellow photog friend of mine that I had no intention of growing a business here. However, the universe had other plans. A coworker asked me to take photos of her family in the fall of 2020. That photoshoot reignited my passion for photography and honestly as corny as it is, the rest is history.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that the road itself has been smooth, however, it has been long and winding with many roadblocks and detours. It has taken me quite a long time to find my niche in the photography world, but I believe as a lifestyle photographer I have finally found it. In no way do I think the obstacles and roadblocks are over, but I do feel much better equipped at this point in my career to maneuver through them.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in lifestyle family, maternity and newborn photography. I strive to capture connection and real life moments rather than perfectly posed situations. My goal for every shoot is to capture my families in action and to tell the story of their life at that current moment or milestone. I take a lot of pride in my ability to connect with my clients, especially the kids I get the pleasure to work with. There is something so special about capturing each family and their connection together in that particular moment. I believe what sets me apart is my relaxed personality, ability to go with the flow and make each and every shoot as fun as possible.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Invest in yourself and your business! Taking the time and investing the money in your education and the growth of your business is so incredibly important. I would also say grow your community, because having people in your corner who know exactly what you are going through is invaluable. I still have so much to learn and so many goals to achieve, but honestly, no regrets and I am so incredibly proud of where I am today.
