Check Out Paula Hughes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Hughes.

Hi Paula, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Paul has a lengthy background in real estate, as he has previously been a realtor and is currently also a real estate appraiser. Paula began her career in finance but had always had a very strong passion for design and decor. Together they have an extensive background in flipping houses. Several years ago, they decided to pursue their true passions and utilize their talents in a new career path together. Paula enrolled in the Interior Design Institute and became a licensed interior designer while Paul pursued his general contractor’s license. Together this husband and wife team formed what is now Designs By Hughes where they are a start to finish design and general contract company.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It actually has been a pretty smooth road as it just seems so natural for us to be doing this and it honestly is such a great fit for us.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Both growing up in small towns, Paul in Melrose, and Paula in Freeport, we both enjoyed the freedom of being pretty independent from day-to-day, free to explore our environments. Paul’s mother, Bonnie Hughes was a realtor in the area and also a real estate appraiser. Paul fondly remembers riding along with her on her appointments when he was a little boy and took an interest in her job from a young age. He kept himself busy building bird houses, tinkering with taking things apart and rebuilding them and being artistic. Paula had a passion for creating lovely interior spaces from a young age. She loved going furniture shopping with her parents and was allowed to completely decorate her own bedroom as a young girl. She fondly remembers choosing her own paint colors, wall paper, furniture and decor. Her parents, Charlie and Shirley Heidgerken owned and operated Charlie’s Cafe in Freeport where she spent a lot of time as a child learning the importance of hard work.
