Check Out Reid Jarvi’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reid Jarvi.

Hi Reid, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started photography and filmmaking fourteen years ago in Burnsville MN. Learning dance from watching youtube and seeking a method for improving and tracking progress I learned how to use basic camcorders and DSLRs. After expanding into other forms I feel in love with image making and now work full time at National Camera Exchange and shooting freelance events, films, and portraiture!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Learning how to capture a community as a peer rather than an outsider is always a goal of mine. Being part of the hip hop and street dance community took me years to develop the technique and confidence to film and photograph events and personal projects in an authentic and professional way! The middle ground between tech, culture, and communication is always a welcome challenge!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My largest project to date was with my fam (crew) mate Ryan Louprasong. We produced a short film for our friend and phenomenal choreographer Andy Mor. The project has since won a number of awards from film festivals both local and national. Scaling small scale community projects to larger production has been something I have strived to achieve since I’ve entered the dance space! Documenting Uprizing (our local krump event) is another high water mark among the branded work with redbull, the vikings, and warehouse district!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Seek authenticity and understanding first! Those mentors who have given me the most over my career so far (Roosevelt Mansfield, Xavier Tavera, Robert King) have all approached the art forms we shared from a completely different perspective! The important through-line for me has been how best to navigate community, carry myself, and think about art in an ethical and honest way!
