Today we’d like to introduce you to Tana Ostman.
Hi Tana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started doing landscape photography 5 years ago right after high school. It had begun as a hobby of mine, that I eventually turned into my full time career today. One of my best friends growing up loved my landscape images and suggested I shoot her sister’s senior portraits. At the time I didn’t think much of it, I figured it would be fun, so why not? I grew up in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities in the small town of Stacy. Taylors Falls was only a 20 minute drive for us so we went there during fall for the photo session.
At the time, I had a little Sony Point & Shoot camera that I spent a total of $200 on. We completed the session and upon editing the photos, I really began to love how the portraits had come out. Thus grew my passion for taking portraits. I was encouraged by friends and family to pursue this passion because they also loved the portraits.
Over the next couple years, I began taking more and more portraits, learning to perfect my craft and provide my clients with incredible images they can cherish for the rest of their lives. I worked full time in the logistics industry for 8 years while I grew my hobby into a legitimate business. It was there in those office jobs that my passion to be an entrepreneur grew. With persistence and dedication, I continued to work to grow my business as much as I could.
With more of my work getting out there, the more I received inquiries from people to shoot their photos. It was in the last two years that I began doing performance photography, and that’s where the real fire struck. Capturing artists in their element, telling their story to a crowd, capturing their emotion. Now I exclusively work as a photographer and videographer. My clients are my world and I strive to bring them high quality content they can use to further their career or cherish as memories forever.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have faced many challenges along this road of entrepreneurship. In the beginning, I struggled with having high quality images. I knew that if I was going to take photography seriously, I would need to upgrade my gear. From there, I struggled with having fast enough equipment to render these images I was taking. Money was a hurdle for me with having regular bills like everyone else. However, these struggles pushed me to work harder, work more overtime and save to get these things that I needed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in performance photography and portraits. I am known for my crisp and clean images that truly capture the emotion in the moment.
I am most proud of my body of work. I have worked with a lot of different people across the entire United States and Canada. My clients love the images they receive from me and that’s what make’s me the most proud. How happy my clients are with my product. My dedication to my clients and the consistent high quality work I give to my clients is what set’s me apart from others.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I wouldn’t be where I am without my clients! They are what keeps me flowing and creating. Next to them, I have to thank my wonderful boyfriend Miles. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He has supported me the most, literally even coming with as my assistant on shoots to help me. He has brilliant ideas and is always innovating. He pushes me to be a better businesswoman and photographer every day. I also have to thank my friends and close family, they have always supported me and my dreams to be a great content creator.
