Today we’d like to introduce you to The Harlow Pennies.
The Harlow Pennies, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Harlow Pennies began a few years ago at a coffee shop. Michaela and Alexandria had been told for years by a mutual that they would be great friends. After almost a decade of passing by each other in the school hallways and seeing each other in local productions, the two finally decided to give the friendship a try. While at the coffee shop, the two were singing along with the radio, and they hit a magical harmony that prompted Alexandria to propose the idea of a band. Michaela could kinda sorta play the ukulele, and Alexandria could kinda sorta play the guitar– what more could they need? After compiling a list of songs they could cover they wrote their first song, “Haunting”, and debuted it at their first gig. After that, their support system and fan base grew. The duo eventually got their first single on streaming services and they have been working on a full-length album for a while now.
The Harlow Pennies began after Michaela and Alexandria finally chose to start a band after years of walking in the same circles, but never really interfacing. When they began, their chemistry and creative compatibility were undeniable, and they quickly began writing music together and progressing their skills as vocalists and songwriters.
After they found their rhythm, they began to gig around Pine County and then cultivate a loving fan base of family, friends, and new listeners. Their support bolstered the duo into starting the process to record their songs. After recording their first single, “Haunting”, they realized that this was something they thoroughly enjoyed and could do forever. Their passion and drive pushing them forward, they uploaded their single on streaming services, and have been working to keep that momentum going. Late this spring, they released their second single, “Fool’s Gold”.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the primary obstacles faced by the ukulelist, Michaela, is her muscle disease: myasthenia gravis.
The other obstacle The Harlow Pennies deals with is insecurity and confidence.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Harlow Pennies are a gothic, indie duo. We are known mostly for our lyrical lyrics and harmonies.
What matters most to you? Why?
We think what matters most to us is the friendship that started it all. We often say, “when it’s not fun anymore, we will stop”. This began as two friends wanting to share our talents with people and create opportunities for ourselves that we only dreamed were possible. This will remain about friendship and expression.
