Check Out Thea Jensen’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thea Jensen.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
I am from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and grew up in a unique family. I had the privilege of being raised vegetarian and learning about the healing arts from a young age. My mom was a massage therapist, among other healing modalities; My dad was a photographer, musician, and athlete. My parents were into health and wellness and ran their own businesses. So I got a lot of inspiration from them, and having this background has influenced my work. After high school, I went to my mom’s massage school and did massage for about a year before attending The Aveda Institute. I graduated in 2001 and have been working in a salon ever since. In the beginning, I did hair, massage, skin care, and nails in the salon. As time passed, I decided to specialize in just hair. In 2009, my heart wanted to return to yoga and become a certified teacher. I have done several pieces of training since then. I taught for many years until my son was born in 2014. Fast forward to 2020, and as we returned from the pandemic shutdown, I realized that I was getting burned out and needed a huge change on how I ran my business. I found Destroy The Hairdresser, and getting a coach was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. After 20 years in this profession, I have finally taken myself and my work seriously. That I have a lot to offer people through what I do, and have gained a huge amount of confidence. I am proud of what I have created. Through that, I have come down to specialize in all types of color. In 2021, I started a 4-year program to be a professional astrologer as well as do hair. Getting an astrological reading can be life changing, and helpful on our path in life. I am looking forward to blending all of these modalities together.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges in my life was losing my mom during my Saturn return at 29. We found out suddenly that she had brain cancer and lived for only 9 months. That took me on a deep inward journey. Luckily, I was finishing up my first yoga certification then, which helped tremendously in my healing process. It was a profound experience to witness her death. It has given me perspective, and depth. I was hungry for meaning and started to read about past life studies, regressions, and near-death experiences. It was a soul longing to begin to understand death and find connection with my own spirituality.

Another challenge was starting a business when I was young, and not really understanding my finances. I lived beyond my means, and made mistakes financially and had to file for bankruptcy, which was a tough decision. It was a big low point in my life. Looking back, I wish I had made different decisions, but it was a clean slate, and I have made wiser choices after that experience. I am grateful for what it has taught me.

In 2019, I lost my younger sister to an overdose. Understanding a person you love who is suffering from addiction has been a challenge. It has been a painful thread throughout my life and family.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hair colorist specializing in blondes, corrective colors, big transformations, vivids, lived-in natural colors, redheads, and brunettes. I love all colors! I am proud of being able to be creative, help people feel spectacular about how they look and pamper them at the same time. What sets me apart is that I offer a warm paraffin hand dip, long scalp massage, and organic face hydrosols to every client. I also do not double book, so my time with each person is focused on them. I also charge my rate hourly and don’t take tips, so it is all-inclusive and gender neutral.

I am now starting to take astrological consultations and really want to focus on how it can help families and parents better understand their children and partners. As well as consulting with teachers before each school year and how it can help them in the classroom. Knowing a few key things can help tremendously in how they approach their teaching and students each year. I have a passion for teaching, learning, children and health.

The other part of the work I am doing is understanding and dismantling my inherited trauma in all the systems of oppression, white supremacy and patriarchy. This is a life long process and thankful for an amazing community that is also doing this work.

We would love to hear about any fond memories you have from growing up?
Some of my favorite memories are playing in my backyard with friends in our big sandbox and tree fort. Traveling to NYC to be in the Macy’s Day Parade with my high school marching band. And traveling with my family to see my dad’s races. He is an endurance athlete and has done several triathlons, ultra-marathons, and bike races. We got to go to Hawaii twice for the Hawaiian Ironman, Badwater Ultra-Marathon, and to San Francisco for the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon.
