Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Johnson.
Hi Alexandra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
FlowFit started in an unconventional setting, and fortunately, we became one of the few businesses who got their start during the pandemic. My partner Ashlee Doheny and I had always daydreamed about opening a studio space that was the representation of the best of both of our skill sets. Ashlee had been managing Title Boxing Woodbury for years, and I was teaching 20+ yoga and fitness classes per week all over the twin cities. When the pandemic hit, the world went virtual. We were still teaching for our respective studios when we decided to try our hand and starting our own fitness platform. Through many iterations and a long year of trial and error, the current FlowFit Yoga and Fitness virtual studio was born. As life started to return to “normal” we realized that our students and members wanted a space to call FlowFit home. Connecting virtually was great when it was our only option, but we all were craving that human connection. That drive for community combined with the lack of a great studio space in Oakdale (where I live) drove us to find the perfect home for our virtual studio. We are now in the process of our studio buildout and could not be more excited!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve learned over the course of the last year that opening a business is anything but smooth, and certainly is more undefined than expected. On top of having to learn every skill associated with opening a business (my college background is Chemistry), navigating an ever-changing world was pretty intense. Staying on top of what our members needed was especially challenging when each person taking a yoga or fitness class was doing it from somewhere different. We had to learn to be very aware of the challenges of practicing at home with distractions, not to mention on my end trying to work from home and teach fitness classes while two other family members were also working out of the same house! The biggest challenge came in the form of my personal health. When I first started developing the virtual platform, I went through an intense period of stress that caused me to lose the vast majority of my hair. That alone created its own cascade of stress and health struggles but has only reaffirmed why this community needs a place to feel welcomed and practice mindfulness.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about FlowFit Yoga and Fitness?
FlowFit Yoga and Fitness is a yoga and fitness studio as well as a full virtual platform. Both Ashlee and I have spent the last 7 years in the fitness and yoga industry and we wanted to bring together the very best techniques and aspects that we have learned. FlowFit’s mission is to prove to individuals what they are capable of, through exploration of unique & exciting movement, challenging classes, and engaging techniques. We strive to help you become your most confident and centered self with the support of an incredible community. Our classes will be geared more towards high intensity and fitness with a strong element of mindfulness woven in. We also offer restorative classes, meditations, and workshops to give you a fully rounded routine.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
It will never be the perfect time to start, and there will always be a seemingly never-ending amount of hurdles! It is absolutely possible to follow your dreams and make your own space in this world. Just start somewhere. Maybe that’s a blank word document where you jot ideas, perhaps it’s beginning to define your brand. Start. Take things one day at a time. Write down daily/weekly goals and you will start to progress toward your endgame. Most importantly, be brave!
