Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Daum
Hi Becky, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a creative professional with nearly 20 years of experience in publishing as a graphic designer, manager, and creative director. I was born and raised in Minnesota and have lived here most of my life. I now live and work in the South Metro where I live with my wonderful, supportive husband, 3 amazing kids, and our sweet-but-high-maintenance dog.
I am passionate about my faith, lifelong learning, creativity, kindness, and affirming the worth of all people. I started Type B Design in 2024 as a creative outlet amidst the turmoil of the election season. The division, vitriol, and even hatred I saw coming from people online—including people who profess to share my faith—was very difficult to handle. Type B was born out of a desire to spread kindness and promote positive causes, and to channel my emotions in a productive way. I hope to spread beauty and kindness through my design work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a lifelong learner I have embraced the challenges of this new venture—and there have been MANY challenges! I have learned so much over the past few months about many aspects of running a small business. I’m still trying, and failing, and learning as I go. Although I have many years of career and life experience, starting Type B has encouraged me to embrace a growth mindset more than anything I’ve tried in the past— except maybe parenting! Finding reliable suppliers, building an ecommerce website, getting traffic to the Type B website, leveraging social media marketing…all new things. The designs come easily, but the accompanying steps to help them reach the world are more difficult.
As you know, we’re big fans of Type B Design. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Type B Design is an online retailer of clothing, tote bags, stickers, and accessories. We believe in the power of kindness, positivity, and positive advocacy, all wrapped up in Minnesota values. Each product reflects a commitment to beautiful design and progressive causes, inviting others to wear their values proudly and share their interests with the world.
Type B apparel and accessories are designed with care and attention, and only our favorite designs make it onto the site—ensuring you receive products that are meaningful, high-quality, and original. In a world of mass-produced and AI-generated designs that all look the same, Type B offers unique, locally-designed products to celebrate Minnesota, bookish causes, and more.
By shopping at Type B, you’re supporting a small business that values authenticity, purpose, and connection—we’re proud to call Minnesota home, and share these Minnesota values through our designs.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
This process has been a continual exercise in trying new things, embracing failure, and staying resilient through a steep learning curve. However, the most important lesson so far has been the reminder of the value and power of creativity and art. On a personal level, creating and adding beauty to the world has been so cathartic and rewarding for me, and I hope to have the privilege to continue to make lovely things for others. On a larger scale I believe artists, writers, and other creatives have so much power to help people find joy and process difficult situations and events. Art really can change the world.
