Community Highlights: Meet Betsy Morem of Morem & Waller CPAs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Morem.

Hi Betsy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey started in corporate America, where I gained valuable experience working for a large company early in my career. While I appreciated the structure and learning opportunities, I quickly realized that I thrive in environments that offer flexibility and autonomy. That realization led me to leave corporate life and work for a successful commodity trader, a role that taught me a great deal about what it takes to own and operate a small business.

By that time, I had already decided to pursue a degree in Accounting and was actively working toward becoming a CPA. While working for the commodity trader, I launched my own bookkeeping firm and continued earning the credits required to sit for the CPA exam. After passing the exam, I partnered with Mark Waller, CPA, and together we formed Morem & Waller CPAs in 2020.

Since then, my path has become increasingly entrepreneurial. In 2022, I co-founded The MOD Medspa in Austin, MN, and most recently, in April 2025, my husband and I purchased The Tendermaid, an 87-year-old iconic burger joint that’s a staple of the Austin, Minnesota community.

Today, I proudly wear many hats – as a CPA, business advisor, and co-owner of three businesses. I love helping small business owners stay financially organized and think strategically about growth. Entrepreneurship has become both a career and a passion, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to live that out every day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road, but that’s part of what makes the journey meaningful. Entrepreneurship is full of highs and lows, and while the excitement of building something that’s truly yours keeps me motivated, the struggles have been just as important in shaping who I am today.

One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to continually do things better, not just for the business, but for myself as a leader. That means being open to feedback, really listening to it, and actually making changes. It’s humbling, and not always comfortable, but it’s necessary if you want to grow something that lasts.

Another major learning curve has been growing and leading a team. When you start out, it’s easy to fall into the mindset that you have to do everything yourself. But the real magic happens when you realize that your success doesn’t come from doing all the work. It comes from building the right team, trusting them, and stepping out of their way so they can shine. That shift has been transformational for me. Empowering others to take ownership and do their best work is what builds a strong, sustainable business – not just one or two people trying to carry it all.

I’ve also been incredibly lucky to have business partners with different but complementary strengths. We challenge each other, support each other, and work better together than we ever could on our own. That collaborative dynamic has helped me navigate the tough moments and celebrate the wins with people who truly get it.

As you know, we’re big fans of Morem & Waller CPAs. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m proud to be the co-founder of Morem & Waller CPAs, a firm built on the belief that small business owners deserve more than just tax prep once a year. They deserve a partner who helps them grow with clarity and confidence. We offer a full range of accounting, tax, and advisory services, but what really sets us apart is our commitment to strategy. We’re not just about looking back. We help our clients look forward.

We serve a wide variety of industries, but we’ve developed a particular expertise in working with cannabis businesses, medical spas, salons, and wellness-focused businesses, where financial clarity is crucial in navigating complex regulations and scaling effectively.

What makes us different is how personal we make the experience. We don’t just file returns. We get to know our clients, understand their goals, and walk alongside them as their businesses evolve. We’re proactive, collaborative, and focused on helping our clients make smart decisions all year long. For us, it’s not about just surviving tax season, it’s about building something better, together.

How do you think about luck?
I really love this question, because I do consider myself incredibly lucky. So much of who I am and what I’ve been able to build comes from the people who’ve supported me along the way. I grew up in a very loving, encouraging family. My parents are two of the hardest-working, most honest people I know, and they not only taught me the value of hard work but also instilled a deep sense of confidence in me from a young age.

I’ve also been fortunate to have some truly great bosses and mentors throughout my career – people who challenged me, believed in me, and helped shape my path. And perhaps the greatest stroke of luck was meeting my husband, Zach. He is the most supportive partner I could ask for – steadfast, encouraging, and always in my corner. I can’t stress enough how much of a difference that kind of support makes, especially when you’re juggling the demands of entrepreneurship and also raising a family.

While I’ve worked hard for everything I’ve built, I know none of it happened in a vacuum. Luck, in the form of the right people showing up at the right time, has played a huge role in getting me to where I am today.
