Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan and Amanda Grubbs.
Hi, Brendan and Amanda; thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We opened our gym facility in 2009- we started as a personal training studio, and as our waiting list kept getting longer, we switched to partner training and, eventually, group training. Within a couple of years, we were offering multiple groups per day. We expanded our space and programming with our growth. We currently run our gym in downtown Grand Rapids, coach young athletes and adults, and even have a group dedicated to older adults. In 2019, we opened Spartan Deli, located at Central Square Mall. Through our experience with our members, we needed a restaurant in the healthy/whole food space, and we wanted to fill that gap. We are open Monday-Saturday, 11-2p and specialize in high protein options to fuel active lifestyles or help aid those who want to lose body fat. Our two businesses work well together and bring great joy to serving our community.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been times of adapting to changes and keeping up with current research for the most effective training protocols and Nutritional Science. We don’t necessarily view it as an obstacle, as we love to learn as much as possible and serve our community.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Community-Centered Gym: With effective training protocols, we leave no stone unturned when helping people work for longevity and health. We are more about making this a lifestyle and something people do for the long haul, not a 6- to 12-week plan. As for the Deli, we pride ourselves on being selective in our ingredients and recipes. We genuinely enjoy every item on our menu and have excellent feedback from our community.
What makes you happy?
Community, friendship, and camaraderie: I’ve been honored to watch people and their children grow up with us in our space. Watching someone ditch their limiting beliefs, achieve something hard, and work towards a goal is really what this is all about, and it makes us extremely happy to have a part in that.
