Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Sophia Fox of Fox Natural Medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sophia Fox.

Hi Dr. Sophia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Being a naturopathic doctor is actually my second career. My first career was in marketing a video production. While I was a senior in college, I had gotten really sick. It was a chiropractor who had quite literally saved my life at that time. We were able to rehabilitate my system and get it back to a healthy place. After I had been in the video production world for about two years, I started to feel the call to do something else with my life. I knew we needed more doctors like the chiropractor who had helped me, so I started doing research and came across a naturopathic medical school’s website. That’s when I got the goosebumps and knew I needed to call them. The next day I had called their admissions department and told the advisor that I was willing to study anything at their school. He asked me “ how about naturopathic medicine?” I said “ sure! What does it take to get enrolled?” he told me about the prerequisites needed, so the next day I called a local university to tell them what I was trying to do. The admissions counselor at that school told me “this time of the year, I never have openings in any of those classes,” and when he checked, he had one opening in every single one of the classes I needed! I sent him my application that night and started school again two months later. I graduated from naturopathic medical school in December 2022 and moved to the Fargo Morehead area where I worked for another clinic for two years. I am so grateful for all of the experience and everything I had learned there. In January 2025, I moved to Brainerd, Minnesota and opened Fox natural medicine in February 2025. The clinic has been growing quickly, and I am so grateful for the community being so supportive.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every journey has its challenges and obstacles, and the most important part is how you handle them. There were multiple challenges that could have changed my path, and yet I kept finding ways to push on. Medical school is not an easy journey that is filled with many challenges and triumphs, which continuously pushed me to grow into the person and doctor I am today. Now when I am in the room with a patient and they are expressing their challenges and obstacles, I am a better guide to support and walk beside them as they grow through their challenges. We also get to celebrate their wins!

As you know, we’re big fans of Fox Natural Medicine . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a naturopathic doctor. I went to a naturopathic medical school, where we are trained in everything similar to a medical doctor learning anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, minor surgery, IV therapy, phlebotomy, etc with the addition of naturopathic medicine which includes homeopathy, botanical medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle, hydrotherapy, etc. The laws and scope of practice for naturopathic doctors tend to be a little different across the different states. In the state of Minnesota, I am not able to prescribe pharmaceuticals, perform IV therapy, or perform minor surgery.

I am a primary care family physician. I treat all ages and all conditions. Most people come to my office for hormone health, gut health, and medical mysteries (those who have seen many doctors and no one knows what is happening or they have have been told “there is nothing more we can do for you.”)

Medical doctors are great at running the labs needed for a diagnosis, however when patients get labs that are “normal” but the patients don’t feel well, it is usually because we have to dig a little deeper or the patients health is needing functional support.

My initial visits are 90 minutes, so we have enough time to discuss full health history, complete a general head to toe physical exam, and build a treatment plan. Many patients have told me that they feel better after they leave our first visit, simply because someone took the time to hear their story and ask questions to discover the root cause of their current health status and have a plan to build their health back.

Mid-July Fox Natural Medicine will be starting to offer Constitutional Hydrotherapy sessions for patients. Constitutional hydrotherapy is specific to naturopathic medicine. It uses the combination of hot and cold towels on the abdomen and chest followed by electrical stimulation, and hot and cold towels on the back. It is a simple therapy that is very powerful. Constitutional hydrotherapy infuses energy back into the body which increases vitality, helps to bring balance to the hormones, stimulates healthy metabolism, moderates the nervous system, brings healing to the digestive tract, and stimulates the immune system. At the previous clinic I worked for, I noticed a stark different in the healing progression of those who did the therapies to those who did not. All of them saw progress, however the therapies helped speed up the healing process. I am so excited to be bringing this to my patients here in the Brainerd Area.

When working with me, I always discuss diet, exercise, hydration, laughter/fun, sleep, and stress as those are the basic foundations of health. From there I use a combination of homeopathy, botanical medicine, nutritional supplements, flower essences, hydrotherapy, and more to help the body heal. Each treatment plan is tailored to each individual. Everyone has a different journey to how they got there, so it will require an individualized plan to health their system. I want patients to feel empowered to take back their health, so I see myself as their guide to help interpret the symptoms they are experiencing and provide guidance as they heal.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have had so many mentors, supporters, and cheerleaders along the way that have come and gone throughout the journey. I still have many of those people in my life today, who are a continuous support and joy, and I am so grateful for them. Our naturopathic medical community is small, closely connected, and strong. Our doctors are a continuous support for one another. We often see intense and complex cases, so having a strong network and support system is extremely valuable so we all can continue to support each other and provide amazing care for our patients.

I am so grateful for my patients who are a continuous support and advocate of Fox Natural Medicine. Many of my new patients end up being referrals from current or former patients as well as being referred by locals I have met in our community especially the local health food store.
