Today we’d like to introduce you to Hamisha Alkamooneh.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a second generation pet groomer who branched out on my own six years ago because I struggled to find a salon that could accommodate my needs as a single mom and a grad student. Owning my own business has allowed me to set my own hours, homeschool my kids, and find meaning in my work. My salon is social justice focused and community centered, reflecting my values and the impact I really wanted to make. The best part? I’m able to offer my employees that same flexibility I needed before I opened up shop on my own. Supporting their personal and professional growth, collaborative spirits, and individuality is deeply meaningful to me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been anything but smooth. Long grueling hours without pay, no outside funding for expenses, and very little support meant that my vision was derailed a few times. Luckily, I have been able to steer it back on track again and again, each time easier than the last. There is so much about being a business owner that you don’t realize until suddenly you are the social media expert, star employee, custodian, general manager, event planner, secretary, compliance officer, customer service rep, HR/payroll person, and more, all rolled into one.
We’ve been impressed with Tails of Persia Pet Spa, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in one on one dog grooming services and two on one cat grooming services. Each one of our groomers has their own niche, ranging from aggressive/disabled pets to hand stripping to cats (including bathing) to creative grooming.
Our community presence and volunteer work set us apart, as well as our commitment to accommodating the various and sometimes changing needs of pets and their people.
I’m particularly proud of our community partnerships and our ability to connect with people at events like ArtaWhirl, Pride., Walk for Animals, Doggy Depot, and etc. and even hosting classes to help answer grooming related questions.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Patience and consistency
