Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Meier.
Hi Kerry, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My entire family is from Minnesota. I’m the first in my immediate family NOT to be born there….my folks made it to Wisconsin. LOL. We moved all over the country throughout my childhood, but only ever made it back to Minnesota for visits. I’ve often thought about moving up there to experience more than just my family’s small hometown (Hastings), but the time just hasn’t ever seemed right.
This past December, I was recruited away from my industry (food & bev) to try my hand at being an Insurance Agent/Broker for a company called Symmetry Financial. I started with licensing in my current home state of Georgia and quickly realized I wanted the opportunity to help people all over…and especially to help my family in Minnesota and make sure they were all protected and on the right path to a healthy financial future. Some of the people in my industry find it difficult to reach out to family and close friends in regards to our jobs and how we can help, but my family is and always has been very close, and it was not stressful in the least for me to reach out and see how I could help as many of them as I can to feel safe and secure going forward.
Because my industry DOES allow for non-resident licensing, I can now help people and families all over the state of Minnesota learn what Life Insurance can do for them… from protecting against financial ruin in the face of tragedy to helping children and future generations build generational wealth and grow cash value in policies that can help them build financial success. I’m now licensed in 8 states, but I think my Minnesota license will always be the one that means the most.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had been in the food & beverage for industry for over 20 years when I was approached about this position. I had been a server, bartender, manager, chef, and food truck owner. Taking a sharp left turn into selling insurance was not anything that I saw coming. I’ve had to adjust a lot in how I view things, in what capacity I listen to people, and how hard I’m willing to push myself into unfamiliar territory. The one thing that appealed to me from the beginning was how much we help people.
How fulfilling it is to know that you helped save a wife from having to let go of the family’s home when the husband passed away unexpectedly. How much peace of mind you can give to parents and grandparents when they know their children/grandchildren will be financially taken care of and don’t have to worry about how to afford college or put a down payment on their dream home?
How much stress it takes off of an adult child when they know their aging parent got approved for Final Expense coverage and they can grieve when the time comes, and not have to worry about how they’re going to pay for a funeral. I’m still making adjustments, and doing an incredible amount of work on myself as a person and as an agent, but as long as I’m still learning and using that to grow… I think the struggles are worth it.

What do you think about luck?
I don’t know that I would say I’ve had strings of truly good or bad luck that I’ve noticed in my life. There are always good and bad times….or tough and easier times, but I think life delivers what you’re truly ready for. I’ve always wanted to protect my family in several different ways.
I didn’t know that this business and this job were how I was going to achieve that, but I’m grateful that the education and training I have now will be helpful and life-changing to anyone who crosses my path.
