Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Froiland.
Hi Nicholas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Magical Mercantile is the result of a desire to create adventure, express art, and provide a safe space for a fantasy-filled break from screens and the world, if only for a few hours.
In 2023, we began our business relationship with Level Up Games in St. Paul, filling in the need for a local Game Master to run Dungeons and Dragons. From there, we’ve grown into a regular fixture at Level Up and a familiar name in the community. We’ve also been happy to support and be supported by Dragons, Dungeons, Drinks, even winning a fantasy adventure writing contest with them!
We are currently expanding, onboarding contractor Game Masters who fit our brand and quality, and looking forward to the future and rolling more dice!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Learning and fighting through the ins and outs of running a first-time small business has been difficult to say the least. It was obvious as we began our adventure that there was a market for people who wanted guaranteed-quality Dungeons and Dragons adventures, although marketing, social media, and administrative work was a challenge. Support from amazing people and the local community have been invaluable to gaining a foothold on this journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Magical Mercantile?
Magical Mercantile is a professional, traveling Dungeons & Dragons Game Master service operating in the Twin Cities. We specialize in immersive private D&D campaigns, structured workshops, and public events that combine creative storytelling, humor, and roleplay in a safe and inclusive environment.
We were founded in 2023 and within the first year, the business has established a full-time operation, consistently filling private campaigns and workshops while building a strong reputation for quality and creativity. Milestones include four partnering companies, onboarding contracted GMs, and winning an adventure writing contest.
Our services address a growing need in the tabletop roleplaying community. Many players, particularly newcomers or groups without a full party, struggle to find high-quality, engaging, and accessible campaigns. We provide just that: tailored experiences, creating an environment where players of all levels feel included, safe, and challenged.
What sets Magical Mercantile apart is a combination of fully AI-free creative content, immersive and character-tailored adventures, traveling flexibility, and a special brand of storytelling that balances humor, intensity, roleplay and whimsy.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
D&D live-plays and podcasts have been a rubric and tool for the adventures many Game Master run. Rules can be important to the game, but when it comes to the creative aspects of worldbuilding and creativity, inspiration comes in many forms: fantasy literature, movies, tv series, videogames, nature, and the human experience.
We also use and recommend an app called PocketBard, which helps create a seamless, ambient experience for the whole table.
