Community Highlights: Meet Rachel Cafferty of Story & Teller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Cafferty.

Rachel Cafferty

Hi Rachel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Though Story & Teller was officially founded in 2023, it was in the making for far longer. I grew up drawing floor plans, rearranging my room until 4 AM, and organizing my grandma’s pantry (true story).

As I built my career in marketing, I still found myself perpetually drawn to the decor industry, freelancing in my spare time for a home boutique in Kansas City and an interior designer in Los Angeles while also blogging. When my husband and I purchased our first home in 2018, I found myself spending endless hours scouring for homewares and furnishings that were stylish, unique, and responsibly made. I remember thinking, “It just shouldn’t be this difficult.”

The idea of Story & Teller sparked: a design-forward brand that cares every bit as much about the backstory of an object as its outward appearance. I am so excited to finally make this dream a reality and help people do the same with their homes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is a steep learning curve. Amidst all the bumps, hurdles, and pain points along the way, I think the biggest for me has been fear.

I’ve had my fair share of self-doubt and panic that I’m going to fail, but I don’t want that to hold me back. I can live with something not working out, but I can’t live with the regret of having never tried. I just tell myself to keep my chin up and my eye on the prize!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am so eager to launch Story & Teller this winter. I’ve been carefully sourcing our initial collection of homewares for months now, and can’t wait to share it with customers looking to bring beautifully and ethically made pieces into their homes.

I’m proud to build my business in a way that supports artisans, makers, and other small businesses from all over the world, which is not yet commonplace enough in the home industry. Beyond our retail offerings, Story & Teller will also have interior styling and organization packages to help customers looking for expert guidance to make their home dreams a reality.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
When I’m alone, I sing a ridiculous amount. I consider car karaoke to be therapeutic and sometimes strain my vocal cords because I go too hard with my solitary performance. Rush-hour traffic is no match for my shamelessness.
