Community Highlights: Meet Romaric Dasse of RJ PHOTOGRAPHY

Today we’d like to introduce you to Romaric Dasse

Hi Romaric, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Romaric Junior Dasse, the founder of RJ Photography. I moved to the United States in April 2008 with my mother and younger brother, without any prior knowledge of English. Our journey was driven by the pursuit of better education and opportunities.

I graduated from Robbinsdale Cooper High School and later earned my bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, where I also met my wife. Today, I am a proud husband and father of two amazing boys.

Before becoming a photographer, I spent time DJing in college and later after relocating to the Twin Cities. My passion for photography began unexpectedly when my wife and I purchased a Nikon D3400 for her food business. The more I took pictures for her, the more I became drawn to the art of photography. Capturing special moments, sunsets, and people quickly became more than just a hobby—it became a passion.

However, the defining moment that pushed me into photography professionally was our wedding. Our videographer failed to deliver any usable footage, leaving us without a single video from our special day. That experience was devastating, and it made me realize how important it is to preserve memories properly. Although I didn’t have videography skills at the time, I committed myself to mastering photography to ensure that no client I work with would ever have to go through what we did. My goal has always been to provide not only high-quality images but also a seamless and memorable experience for every client.

Two months later, I reached out to a photographer in my community and asked if I could learn from him. He was kind enough to mentor me, allowing me to shadow him at weddings and studio sessions. Through this experience, I gained valuable knowledge about both the artistic and business aspects of photography.

Today, I specialize in wedding, portrait, and maternity photography—capturing love, emotions, and life’s most beautiful moments. For me, photography is more than just delivering beautiful images—it’s about building real connections with my clients. I’ve learned that establishing a genuine relationship before the session helps create a comfortable atmosphere, especially for those who are camera-shy. My goal is to make every client feel seen, valued, and confident in front of the camera.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road as I initially expected. Photography is an expensive art, and in the beginning, it was challenging not having the best equipment. I had to give myself time to save, invest, and truly learn the craft. But as many say, it’s not the camera that makes the photographer—it’s the photographer who knows how to create the perfect image, no matter the gear.

Another major challenge has been the business side. With so many photographers available today and many people in our community preferring to hire within their own circles, standing out requires more than just skill. You have to work hard not only to get noticed but also to leave a lasting impression so that when people need photography services again, they remember your name.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
RJ PHOTOGRAPHY specializes in wedding, portrait, and maternity photography—capturing love, emotions, and life’s most beautiful moments. I belive that photography is more than just delivering beautiful images—it’s about building real connections with my clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I genuinely enjoy taking pictures—experimenting with different lighting setups and seeing how the results come to life. Photography is more than just a job for me; it’s a passion that allows me to be creative and capture emotions in unique ways.

Beyond photography, I’m someone who loves life and values meaningful connections. I thrive in an environment where there’s not only great work being produced but also a sense of camaraderie with my clients. I believe that the best photos come from genuine moments, and creating a comfortable, enjoyable experience for my clients is just as important as delivering high-quality images.
