Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Pattison.
Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello! I’m Ryan Pattison, a Minnesota native with a true passion for solving challenges related to home repair and maintenance. After 14 years in corporate America, I finally accepted the fact that staring at a computer monitor all day was not my calling in life, so I made a commitment to make a living doing something I love instead!
My journey to owning a handyman business can be traced all the way back to my childhood. I was always so intrigued with tools and machines. Any time one of our appliances broke I would drag it out of the trash and spend hours taking it apart and putting it back together, eager to figure out how it worked. This natural curiosity followed me into adulthood and grew to include automotive and home improvement, repair, and maintenance. Always eager to find new projects to tackle and new skills to add to my repertoire, friends and family began to call me for help with their needs as well. Soon I began catching myself daydreaming of ditching the corner office and conference calls to pursue working with my hands for a living. I realized that I had finally found my calling… and the rest is history. After 5 years in business my dream has become a reality – with 100% 5 star reviews from my customers on Google maps, I am beyond proud of what I’ve built and feel so incredibly blessed to make a living helping residents of my community while doing something I love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
After quitting my corporate job, I took a month to study for and pass my MN Residential Building Contractors license test before officially launching my business and taking on my first customers. I had decided to go live with my website in mid March of 2020. Unfortunately, the timing was brutal as the MN Governor issued an executive order to shut down non-essential businesses due to Covid. My wife is a hair stylist so her ability to earn an income abruptly ended as her industry was considered “non-essential”. Handymen were still allowed to operate, but the amount of pressure I was under to quickly get my business profitable enough to support my family was crippling. Ultimately, the lockdowns in MN ended up jump starting my business, as many Minnesotans were forced to work from home… suddenly realizing all of the annoying maintenance and repair issues they were faced with all day, every day. They needed a handyman and I was happy to come save the day!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
When I am not watching YouTube videos on how to fix or build things, I love listening to podcasts on fitness, biohacking, and self improvement in general. I am an avid listener of the Huberman Lab podcast as well as Modern Wisdom with Chris Williams, and of course the Joe Rogan Experience! Since I am a 1 man crew with no employees, I often consume over 25 hours of podcasts per week as I can listen while working.
