Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Jorgenson-Hallberg.
Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up on the shores of Lake Superior lends itself to adventure and I was sure I would land on some distant shore. I never thought I would “end up” back in my hometown, however, it couldn’t have turned out any better.
Our family owns Java Moose, a little coffee shop in downtown Grand Marais. How lucky am I to work alongside my parents, sister and our kids everyday. Grand Marais and the North Shore hold a spot in the hearts of so many; we are fortunate to be a part of that story.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Moving back to your hometown always presents challenges, you aren’t viewed as an adult, your education and work experience doesn’t “fit” the jobs available. Housing is extremely expensive and you question your success based on your job. My husband is from the metro and when we moved back 19 years ago, we also struggled to find our friends and a job for him that was fulfilling.
We’ve been impressed with Java Moose, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a small family owned coffee shop located on the shores of Lake Superior in Grand Marais. Our specialty is not coffee, but connections and community. This community has cheered us on through success, carried us at our lowest moments and wished us well for over 20 years. Our community is not the boundaries of this county, but every single person that comes through our doors.
How do you think about happiness?
I come by my happiness pretty naturally. I am filled by the sunshine, fresh air and the smiles of our customers. They might be having a not so great day, and we are able to make it a little better by pouring them a little hug in a cup. I live next door to my entire family, seeing our children and my sister’s kids have everyday relationships with their grandparents is truly priceless. Looking out at Lake Superior from the best office in the world is happiness in and of itself.
