Scruffy Tails Humane Society has been serving homeless animals and the Crookston community since 1982. Over the past four decades, the shelter has weathered challenges that many small nonprofit shelters face – including financial hardships, leadership changes, name changes, and even periods when closure seemed possible. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the community’s commitment to giving homeless animals a second chance.
Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, staff, fosters, donors, adopters, and supporters, the shelter has continued to evolve and grow. Today, Scruffy Tails Humane Society is more than just an animal shelter – it’s a community resource focused on saving lives through adoption, foster care, education, outreach, and compassionate animal care.
Every animal that comes through our doors receives food, shelter, medical care, enrichment, and the opportunity to find a loving forever home. Beyond caring for animals, we work to educate the community about responsible pet ownership and build partnerships that strengthen animal welfare throughout our region.
Since opening in 1982, thousands of animals have found loving homes through our shelter. Our history is one of resilience, perseverance, and hope. Having survived name changes, organizational transitions, and the threat of closure, Scruffy Tails Humane Society continues to move forward because our community believes every animal deserves a chance. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
. It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like many nonprofit animal shelters, we’ve faced ongoing challenges with funding, volunteer recruitment, staffing, and the increasing number of animals needing care. Rising veterinary costs, food and supply expenses, and limited space have made it difficult at times to meet the growing demand for our services.
Throughout our history, we’ve also experienced organizational changes, leadership transitions, name changes, and periods when the future of the shelter was uncertain. There were times when keeping the doors open required tremendous dedication from volunteers, board members, staff, and community supporters who refused to let the shelter disappear.
More recently, we’ve continued to navigate challenges such as overcrowding, emergency medical cases, disease outbreaks that required quarantine protocols, and finding enough foster homes for vulnerable puppies, kittens, and animals with special medical needs. Each obstacle has reinforced the importance of community partnerships, responsible pet ownership, and public support.
While these challenges have tested us, they have also strengthened our organization. Every obstacle has inspired new ideas, stronger community involvement, and a renewed commitment to our mission. Today, Scruffy Tails Humane Society continues to adapt, grow, and serve the community because of the generosity of our supporters and the shared belief that every animal deserves a safe place, compassionate care, and the opportunity for a loving forever home.

Scruffy Tails Humane Society is a no-kill nonprofit animal shelter dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming homeless, abandoned, neglected, and surrendered animals throughout our region. Since opening in 1982, our mission has remained the same: to provide compassionate care and give every healthy or treatable animal the time, medical care, and opportunity they need to find a loving forever home.
What sets us apart is our commitment to every individual animal. As a no-kill shelter, we don’t put a time limit on finding the right family. Whether it’s a litter of orphaned kittens, a senior dog, an animal recovering from illness, or a pet with special needs, we believe every life has value and deserves a second chance.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The animal welfare industry is evolving rapidly, and over the next five to ten years we believe shelters will play an even greater role in supporting both animals and the people who care for them. As pet ownership costs continue to rise, more families may need assistance with affordable veterinary care, pet food resources, behavioral support, and temporary assistance to help keep pets in their homes. We anticipate shelters becoming community resource centers focused not only on adoption, but also on prevention.
At the same time, shelters across the country are facing increasing challenges, including overcrowding, longer lengths of stay, rising veterinary and operational costs, and volunteer shortages. These realities make collaboration more important than ever. Partnerships with local businesses, veterinarians, rescue organizations, municipalities, and community members will continue to be essential to meeting the growing need.
We also expect technology to play a larger role in animal welfare. Social media, online adoption platforms, virtual fundraising, digital volunteer recruitment, and data-driven shelter management are helping organizations reach more people, improve animal outcomes, and strengthen community engagement.
As a no-kill shelter, we believe the future will continue to emphasize lifesaving programs such as foster care, spay and neuter initiatives, responsible pet ownership education, and community outreach. Success will depend on proactive solutions that reduce pet homelessness before animals ever enter a shelter.
