Community Highlights: Meet Tanya Alvarez of OwnersUP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Alvarez.

Hi Tanya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After college, I worked in various roles at small startups with the goal of gaining as much knowledge and experience as possible. At age 25, I decided to start my own marketing agency, but I was filled with nerves and uncertainty. I confided in my mother, who encouraged me to take the leap and reminded me that failure would only lead to greater wisdom.

I went on to launch my marketing agency and grew it from college credit card debt to over $1 million in revenue in the first year. However, I often found myself overwhelmed by the sheer number of decisions I had to make and struggled to determine the most important tasks to prioritize for the growth of my business. Without any peers or coaches to turn to for guidance, I felt lost.

Reflecting on my past experience as a collegiate runner, I realized the importance of having a support structure in achieving success. I saw the need for a similar support system in the world of entrepreneurship, but couldn’t find one that met my needs. That’s when I decided to create Owner’s Up.

The platform provides small groups of entrepreneurs with real accountability, allowing them to meet weekly to discuss goal progress and receive personalized, honest feedback. Additionally, we built simple progress-tracking software that enables business owners to enter goals, track progress, and receive feedback from coaches, while also seeing trends through data aggregation.

With the combination of personal touchpoints and software, entrepreneurs are able to get unstuck, refocus on what’s important, and achieve their business goals more quickly while also finding fulfillment in life. Through OwnersUp, I hope to provide the support and guidance that I wish I had when starting my own business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a young Latina entrepreneur in the early 2000s, I faced numerous challenges while trying to establish my business. One of the most significant obstacles was my young age and feminine appearance in a male-dominated industry. Being just 25 years old and having a baby face often led to others underestimating my abilities and questioning my experience.

I vividly recall pitching to Fortune 500 companies and sending proposals that were well-received until the moment we met in person. The realization of my youth often caused them to retract their interest, and I was left feeling discouraged. To make matters worse, securing funds to scale my business or even renting an office space in Manhattan proved to be a difficult feat. Due to my family’s financial struggles, I could not seek their support in my endeavors

Growing up, my mother raised four children on her own, and making ends meet was a constant challenge for us. Despite my desire to turn to my family for assistance, I knew it was not a viable option given their circumstances. Through pure grit, I was able to overcome these hurdles and build my business from the group up.

We’ve been impressed with OwnersUP, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
