Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Frei.
Amanda , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved art (Body Art specifically). The idea of wearable art that you carry with you always has forever been my passion. I decided I wanted to be a tattoo artist at 9yrs old, when I saw my first tattoo. Sadly the industry hasn’t always been super inviting to new artists (especially female artists). I had to put in good fight to get to where I am, it wasn’t just given to me. I think that’s part of the reason I love to see my team of artists grow. Currently our studio has 5 female artists. I say our because my studio is made up of several women artists and all their opinions and ideas for the space matter. While I’m the owner all big decisions for A- Town Tattoo go through the entire team. We’re more of a tattoo family (that get along) than co- workers, and that makes work the last 10years pretty awesome. To say I love what I do and the space I’ve created to cultivate this art is an understatement. What started with me a 300 sq. Ft. room and a dream, has really turned into something wonderful. We’ve been in our expanded space for nearly three years. The new ship layout includes a full lobby (previously the entire), the open floor plan service room (5 stations), office, and large break room, plus utility rooms. I’m in works of changing the use of some of our space and expanding our service area a bit more by the end of 2026. Ontop of all the everyday projects we do, I really try to give back to the community wherever I can. The shop does a couple flash tattoo events a year and we select a charity or a few to be the recipients. We help with community events and even gave away full thanksgiving meals to those in need last year. Whether it’s art or a community event, There’s always something new happening at A-Town Tattoo

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Initially getting into this industry was tough. I walked the streets of the cities and went in to so many tattoo shops only to get the door essentially shut in my face. I always at min take time to chat with aspiring tattoo artists. I’ll give you friendly advice and try to encourage you even if I don’t feel you’re a great fit for my studio. This is what I meant earlier with (Gatekeepering). The tattoo industry used to be very unwelcoming to new comers and that’s the only thing I didn’t like able the industry. I try everyday to put as much good into the world as I can. If that means I’m using 15min to talk to someone and encourage them, then I make that conversation happen.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love tattoos of all kinds and I like to work in various styles. Overall I lean more towards illustrative realism, with ac twist of traditional my personal style. I also really love creating fine line floral pieces and things spooky but cute is definitely up my alley, but I love doing pet portraits and so many other things too. . I’m proud of every piece I get the honor of creating. I’d say what sets me apart is my truly caring nature and ability to listen to my clients. When you’re in my chair it’s truly your “you time” if you need to talk to process something you’re going through we can, . Not chatty? If you’re more a sit quietly with your thoughts and process type of person that’s perfectly ok too. I strive to make every visit a truly great and memorable experience for each client.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family, a sunny day, waking up to a new day and a chance to day something better. My family is my drive they have always kept me grounded all while pushing me forward. I have two more adult biological children and one stepson. They are all amazing in their own ways and I love watching them continue to grown and cultivate the lives they want for themselves. While I would have loved to pass the tattoo torch onto one of my children, I understand they have their own paths to follow and in incredibly proud. My husband and I have been together 23 years, and it hasn’t always been easy but it’s been for the most part fun. He’s my person through it all and I’m truly lucky to have him. He’s always been the soft to my hard and you need that balance in your life. While I am happy when it rains too, there’s just something great about soaking up the sun. It always lifts my spirits. My life motto is: Try to be a better version of yourself tomorrow than you were today. I’m not sure where I originally heard it but it stuck. I know I’m not a perfect person, but I try to lean from every experience and grown. I try to put as much good into the world as I can, and I try feel I see a return of more good as well.
