Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Schreiber.
Hi Ann, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’ve had a love for writing since I was very young. I used to write short stories in a notebook during recess in elementary school. When my family got their first personal computer in the late 80s, I taught myself to type and learn word processing programs so that I could write my stories faster. In high school, I was actively involved in the school paper and served as editor-in-chief in my senior year. I was then co-editor-in-chief during my freshman and sophomore years of college at Inver Hills Community College.
I pursued English and journalism after transferring to the University of Minnesota, graduating with my bachelor’s degree in English in 1998. I later returned to school, attending the University of St. Thomas where I received my Masters of Business Communication in 2007. Throughout most of my career, I worked in various marketing roles, or sales marketing roles. In 2019, I started freelancing as a side hustle, writing blogs and landing pages for various clients. And in January 2023, I finally made my dream a reality, turning that side hustle into a full-time gig. In March 2023, I formed an S-Corp, Copywriting For You.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s had its share of ups and downs. I had dreamed of being a writer for a long time, both to help clients and for my purposes. It seemed that something always got in the way. And I was worried I wouldn’t be able to maintain the lifestyle I wanted. I also had a scarcity mindset, worried that the clients wouldn’t be there.
But, I realized earlier this year that I had the skills I needed. I had a background in sales and I understood the concept of business development. I had always been a talented writer and rarely struggled with ideas on what to write about. I was an avid reader and was well-versed in how to find the information I needed to support the points in my articles. And, I had adequate experience in customer service and client development, so I knew how to manage expectations and overdeliver.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I describe myself as a freelance blogger and copywriter. But, I think it is important to explain the difference. In most cases, blogging and writing articles are about informing readers. It’s about providing helpful information that answers questions, solves pain points, etc. Copywriting is more persuasive, designed to help sell or drive a certain action. I happen to enjoy doing both.
That said, I approach my work in two ways.
1 – Writing on my website, Copywriting For You. My blogs on that site help provide helpful information to prospective clients looking for a blog for their business. And, at the same time, I am trying to share my experiences as a blogger, to help others that might look to embark on the same path.
2 – Writing for clients. I love the variety in the different assignments that come my way. I have the privilege of writing on so many topics ranging from health and wellness, personal finance, family and relationships, marketing and business, and so much more. I have some clients for whom I write several articles each week and others for whom I write just a few times a month.
I think my background in client and customer service sets me apart from others. I am highly responsive and I know what it is like on the other side, waiting for a deliverable. I don’t want my clients to wait and wonder when they might get their deliverables from me. I am highly communicative and responsive, and they always know what to expect. I also offer a relatively short turn-around time (typically less than 7 days) and I love to surprise and delight when I can.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I had a very fortunate childhood and have so many favorite memories. But there are probably two that stand out in my mind that align with who I am today and this topic.
The first was when my dad brought home our first Apple computer. I believe it was sometime in late 1984 or 1985 when we got an Apple IIc computer. I remember my dad unwrapping it, setting it up, and giving me a keyboard with a blank screen. And I just started to write. It was slow going at first, but in just a few months, I had taught myself to type – and fast. I was such a good typist that when my high school required me to take a typing course, my parents argued for me to have the ability to test out of the class. Not only did I test out of it, but my typing skills exceeded that of my teacher.
My kids love this next memory I have shared a few times. I transferred to the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities as a college junior. On one of the first few days of the fall semester, I had an assignment and needed to head over to Walter Library to do some research. I had never been in that library before and was searching for the card catalog. It wasn’t there. I went to the librarian asking for assistance, and I kid you not, she took me by the shoulders and walked me over to a computer. And she said, in these exact words: “I’d like to introduce you to the World Wide Web.”
Yes, that happened. And at the time, you could search much of the internet in all of 20 minutes.
