Today we’d like to introduce you to Barb Schrader and Nate Wormington.
Hi Barb and Nate, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We are best friends and co-parents. Nate is a Physician Assistant specializing in derm and esthetics and Barb is working on her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling.
In addition to our full time jobs and co parenting our eleven year old, we also podcast! Our podcast is called Exes Not Experts and is about parenting as a LGBTQIA+ family. Our story is a unique one. We have been best friends since middle school, were married for five years, and got divorced in 2012. Our podcast encompasses what it’s really like to grow up in rural Missouri queer, come out in your late twenties, and remain friends with your ex.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To get the full story of our journey check out season 1 of our podcast on apple, spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Some of our struggles include being raised in conservative, religious, rural Missouri as unknowingly closested queer kids with no representation, getting married way too young, starting a family, coming out (Nate in his 20s, Barb in her 30s), divorce, finding yourself, dismantling our idea of “normal” family systems and building one that worked for us and our daughter.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
First and foremost we are queer parents and storytellers. We are hoping our story gives hope, representation and connection to others who may be going through similar situations.
In our day jobs, Nate is a Physician Assistant working in Dermatology and esthetics. His practice in Minnesota has skewed more toward the esthetics side, and in that regard he is dedicated to providing his patients with natural results. He believes the best aesthetic work/injections are the ones that are subtle and restorative, rather than making someone look like a totally different person. He is currently practicing at Minnesota Vitality & Anti-Aging Center.
Barb is in a big transition as far as her life goes. She left public education after being a teacher for fifteen years and is currently working on her second Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Capella University. She also tutors and is an education consultant on the side.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
You might be surprised that in a world of perfectly curated social media, you can connect with two queer kids from Southwest Missouri who are carving out a space for people who don’t have it all figured out and aren’t trying to pretend that they do, because at the end of the day we are…
