Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Dee.
Hi Caleb, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My music career, like many, started during the pandemic. I had just graduated college when my girlfriend of a few years dumped me and I had to quarantine in my house for a few months. So naturally, I didn’t have anything to do anymore. No schoolwork, no girlfriend, no job. So I started writing songs! My first few tunes were produced by my good friend Zach Foty, who fought me everything I know about music production and songwriting.
From there, I started to produce my tracks and tracks for other artists, and all of a sudden I found that it was my full-time job. I’m super fortunate to have had as much success in my career as early on as it is. I spend most of my time now either in Los Angeles working on my and other artists’ projects, or at my home in Minneapolis playing Fortnite and getting Applebees with my friends.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been both a smooth and rocky road. It’s very easy to feel insecure when you dump your heart and soul into your music, and oftentimes songs don’t stream/perform the way that you would like them to. It’s also hard trying to stay on top of promoting your music because you know that there’s got to be a point where your friends and family might get apathetic towards it.
However at the same time, I’ve been able to play a lot of cool shows with my project, I’ve seen playlist support from streaming platforms like Apple Music and YouTube Music, and I’ve been able to meet/work with a lot of publishers and bigger artists that have helped me along my way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My specialty at this point is songwriting/production, half for myself and a half for a roster of artists that have hired me to make their music. I’m most proud of my music as it represents the most honest sides of myself and my journey as a person and musician.
And I like to think that part of what sets me apart from other people in my field is that I’m a “one-stop shop,” meaning I write/produce/mix all of my songs and my clients.
