Conversations with Erika Loiland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Loiland.

Hi Erika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Mint Elm during covid. I have always loved taking pictures and wanted to do something creative with them. Right now I mostly put them on cards because at the time when I started a lot of people were staying home so I figured cards were a great way to send a friend something special other than a text or phone call. I am slowly getting into adding prints or putting my pictures on canvas as well. I have done a few craft fairs and I mostly post on Instagram and Facebook. I recently also started a website www.mintelmphoto.com. I like to explore different places and so all of my photos are taken from various places I have visited. I edit the pictures to look drawn or painted. It’s a fun creative way to edit pictures than traditional picture taking. Who doesn’t love getting a beautiful card in the mail from a friend or family member?

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any small business or starting a business, it’s always up and down. Some months sales are great and everyone is buying stuff and then other months are slow. Also, I have my family to take care of so I can’t always add new products or advertise like I would like to. Businesses take a while to build and grow.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am proud of the pictures I have created. It’s a lot of fun. I try to put a little different spin on the photos to make them look more artistic. I hope that the way I edit my photos sets me apart from other photographers. Everyone has a different vision of what art is. This is some of mine.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I guess the only risk I have taken is joining a few craft fairs. They are a lot of prep and cost and you never know how successful they will be.
