Conversations with Fong Vang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fong Vang

Hi Fong, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since I could remember, I have always been into art. I remember drawing all the time in grade school and in 2013, I graduated College and started my tattoo career. My apprenticeship began at The Truth Tattoos in St. Paul, MN. I was extremely nervous because it was the beginning of something new, but also excited for the journey ahead. After a year of working as an apprentice, I completed my hours and graduated as a full fledge artist AKA a licensed body art technician. After a few years, I relocated to another shop in Brooklyn Park. I didn’t stay there very long because I wanted to have a studio of my own. I knew it would be challenging, but it felt like the right choice.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is never a smooth road when you have to pave it for yourself. In the early stages of anyone’s career, having a good support system is vital. Unfortunately, tattooing was a taboo in my culture, therefore I recieved little support from family and friends. It took many years before they came around.
I opened a studio with very little knowledge of business and finances. In hindsight, It would have saved a great deal of time and money if I had done a bit more research. With the help of my wife, we were able to figure things out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve been a Licensed Tattoo Artist for almost twelve years. I opened up my own studio in Roseville called Inkarnate Tattoos. We’ve been established for eight years now. Portraits are one of the most challenging designs to tattoo, but growing up, I enjoyed drawing people and animals the most so I figured, if I can do it well, it may set me apart from everyone else. But of course, it wasn’t easy. It took me about two years before I had the courage to attempt a portrait tattoo.
I think what I’m most proud of is sticking to my guts and choosing what I believe is the right path despite all the negativity. It can be a very difficult and lonely road when everyone is telling you what you’re doing is wrong.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for upcoming tattoo artists or anyone looking to open up their own tattoo shop would be to do as much research as you can before starting out. Be patient and find the right licensed mentor and make sure your interests are aligned. Lastly, it’s a lot more work than you’d expect so be prepared, patient, and have a good support system.
