Conversations with Francisco Escobar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Francisco Escobar

Hi Francisco, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I gravitated towards cameras at a young age. I loved using my mom’s film cameras. Even though I would break them sadly. Then in middle school I was gifted my little red canon point and shoot. I used that to capture moments as much as I could. Then high school came around. It was as soon as I took a yearbook class in high school. When I picked up a dslr camera for the first time. That’s when I realized photography, that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life. Right out of high school I went to school for photography at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College. I got my first studio with some class mates. Bought equipment I felt like a real photographer.

At a certain point after college. I didn’t think my photo journey would continue. I thought it would end. But one magic moment brought me back. I found myself working in the industry I love. Finally a milestone was that all my income was from photography I couldn’t believe it. It was a dream to achieve something like that.

Now I get to capture beautiful moments in history for couples, families. Working within the commercial photo industry. As well as creating art within my photo studio.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth road. I didn’t always feel like. Working within this industry sometimes I really noticed. That there wasn’t someone that looked like me behind the camera. I was always just happy to be working, learning from other photographers. But sometimes it would hit me. That realization. Sometimes it made me feel like I wouldn’t make it.

There was a time right after college. Working retail for years. Being in that environment I became complacent, it affected my photo journey to the point where I thought it would end. I was taking photos less and less. Expenses were adding up. It seemed like it was all over. Until a friend reached out that a studio was looking for photo assistants. That was the foot in the door I had been looking for. I quit my full time job and jumped right into freelance world. No idea if I would make it or fail. But I did I ended up working commercially for 5 years as a photo assistant. Now as a photographer as well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
