Today we’d like to introduce you to Grant and Amber Larson.
Hi, Grant and Amber. I am so excited to have you on the platform. Before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story, and how did you get to where you are today?
We are both originally from Iowa but fell in love with the Park Rapids area. Grant loves to be outdoors and fish. Amber worked for about 10 years in customer service and we have three great kids who keep us very busy. Grant’s parents bought Loon’s Nest in 2013 and we ran it with them for five summers before buying it from them.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges we have gone through was navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and coming out stronger on the other side. We have been very fortunate to have a strong family and friends support system, but most importantly, guests who come to the resort year after year have been so encouraging and have become more like friends. A big lesson we have learned is that in any business or really life there will always be challenges and things that go wrong but it’s all about your perspective and how you handle those things. One of the quotes that our family loves is: “everything negative-pressures, challenges-is all an opportunity for me to rise.”-Kobe Bryant So we don’t have to see challenges or obstacles as necessary bad but an opportunity to work through them and come out better on the other side.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of our favorite and most rewarding parts about the resort is that we are in the memory business. We proudly provide a space for families and friends to create life-long memories. Loon’s Nest is located in a great town, Park Rapids. Park Rapids has so much to offer, including the Mississippi Headwaters close by, great bike trails and golf courses, and incredible lakes and fishing. We are only about 1 mile from town, so you feel like you are in the north woods while still having all the conveniences of town nearby.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk and change can be a tricky thing. The most significant risk we took when buying the resort was moving our family from Iowa to northern Minnesota. At the time, our kids were 13, 11, and 7, and moving away from our family and friends in Iowa wasn’t easy. We still miss different things, especially our extended family, but we can see that the move and owning a resort have had many blessings for us personally and professionally. When taking a risk it’s essential to realize that not everything will always be perfect.
