Today we’d like to introduce you to Irene Wesee.
Hi Irene, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Irene is a portrait photographer originally from Liberia who now resides in Lakeville, MN. She started creating and sharing portraits of her children to increase visual representation of black and brown children in the fineart discourse. Her unique ability to improvise has become a signature within her photography, including using pieces of fabric to create custom garments and accessories on clients just before being photographed. Her projects are a mix of storybook fantasies and cultural influences that capture both the magic of her children and clients while leaving the viewer wondering. Her portraits have been featured multiple times in art displays including digital fineart children’s magazines as well as the MN State Fair, where she was awarded 2nd place in the 2021 fineart competition. She was also one of twelve fine art featured artists of the day at the MN State Fair in 2022. In the words of Irene, “photographs help me tell the stories that I can’t articulate in words.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Bridging the gap in fineart photography hasn’t always been smooth. In the earlier stages of sharing my work on social media, I remember the day I read someone referring to my daughter as a monkey. As artists, early criticisms of our work can hurt the most and as a mother, it was personal. The comment pushed me to do more, not only for others but for myself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As stated in the intro, I have been a casual portrait photographer for over 10 years. My main career as a psychiatric nurse in combination with my personality, aids in my ability to make people feel comfortable and relaxed during their photo session.
My unique improvisation talent in creating signature and one of a kind clothing for my clients has helped me to stand out in the fine-art sphere. I’m also fierce with a glue gun, and can create a hairpiece or props for photoshoots, which decreases costs and the stress on my clients to secure their own.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
In my everyday work, I like to encourage my patients to create little moments of joy. Reminding clients that happiness doesn’t have to be something grand, but can be found through gratitude in what we consider as mundane. I have been intentional on practicing this myself. Although not always easy, it’s possible. Right now, I am finding happiness in spending time with my children and creating with my camera again.
