Conversations with Jaclyn D’Amico

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn D’Amico.

Jaclyn D’Amico

Jaclyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I truthfully fell into esthetics by lucky chance! I never knew what I wanted to do for a living and when I tore 2 ligaments in my ankle and couldn’t play volleyball in university, I made the decision to change course. I ended up deciding to go to school at the Aveda Institute, more interested in hair at the time than esthetics, but was convinced to take both courses, starting with esthetics. I ended up liking esthetics enough to not continue with cosmetology after I graduated with my esthetics license and immediately started working at a top salon and spa in the south metro of the twin cities, providing skin services, facial and body waxing, and tinting services, at 19 years old (I’m 31 now). There, I was pushed a lot to grow my clientele and skill level while recieving top notch product education as well as learning new, more advanced treatments. I took a leap after 7 years, in search of more flexibility and creative freedom, and opened my own studio, Spruced Brow & Skin, including February of 2020, focusing on skincare, brows, and lashes. Unfortunately, I did have to close due to covid 1 month after my grand opening. I made the most of the forced time off by continuing to sell products and at-home facial kits and delivering them directly to my clients homes, with my newly adopted 9 year old covid dog! After just a year of being open, I met my current partner when I went on vacation to Mexico. A friend and I rented a boat one day and, long story short, I fell in love with the captain! We were long distance for a year and because I was my own boss, I had the flexibility to travel to see him once to twice per month. Now, I’ve lived in Mexico the last 3 years where I have a small esthetics studio, while still returning to Minnesota every 4-6 weeks for 1 week to service my clients and keep my studio there up and running. My style has evolved over the years. I am fully committed to results + relaxation, really diving into and learning new facial and body massage techniques to incorporate into my services. I am always looking for the most result oriented, least invasive, and holistic treatment options for my clients.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been smooth! I’ve been very fortunate to have survived covid. I know most small businesses really struggled and many closed their doors. It can be stressful trying to juggle my life and businesses in Mexico and in Minnesota. As business owners, we have to wear many hats. I am definitely more of a creative person so the business side of things can be a struggle for me. Being in Minnesota for only 1 week and working 12-14 hours per day can be mentally and physically exhausting. My schedule doesnt always line up with my clients needs or special events but I try to be as accommodating as possible and feel deep gratitude that I have been able to maintain a full client book while still getting new client interest! I absolutely give my all to each clients. Giving a quality experience is my absolute priority, whether you are my first or last client of the day or week.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Brows are the bread & butter of my businezs. I absolutely love using my creative eye to create the best shape and custom tint or stain formulation that will flatter my clients features, skin tone, and hair color. My favorites are my Brow Code Hybrid Stain and inLei Eyebrow Lamination. My other passion, and what really sets me apart from other facialists, is my incorporation of full upper body massage in my treatments. I believe that results oriented treatments don’t need to sacrifice relaxation. My treatments are a true experience. I have focused a lot on facial massage techniques the last few years to help stimulate healthy blood flow to the tissues and releasing tensions that contribute to signs of aging, headache, TMJD symptoms, and fluid retention. No technology can ever replace the benefits of physical touch in my opinion!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Consistency is key! Taking notes is vital. There are a lot of skilled professionals out there so don’t rely on that to create client loyalty. Making sure to write down their products regimes, anything you’ve recommended or want them to incorporate, their concerns, what formula you used, as well as personal details such as jobs, kids, vacations, etc goes a long way. It shows you are paying attention and is a lovely touch that goes towards a lasting relationship and loyalty. Creating a habit right off the bat of educating your clients and pre-booking will set you up for success in the future.
