Conversations with Jaevon Walton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaevon Walton.

Hi Jaevon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised on the Northside of Minneapolis and I played basketball for most of my life growing up. I have always experimented with food and could make a little go a long way. Coming from a big family, I know that food is what always brings us together.

What made me become an influencer? I travel often, and one thing I can’t wait to do when I get to a new destination is try the food! So while in LA, back in December 2021, I thought to make a TikTok of a black-owned restaurant I liked and the idea came to my mind. What motivated me to keep it going was seeing how much people loved finding out about new restaurants as well as how much it helped local businesses and also helped those restaurants gain more business.

The Twin Cities may not be seen as a big foodie area, but I’m here to change that. I love to make people aware of the small and local businesses. I’ve always loved helping people, which plays a big role in why I am also an educator. It just makes me feel good to help and to lead by example. I truly love what I do for the community

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t smooth, to begin with for sure, nobody took me seriously.

I can also say I didn’t realize how tough it was going to be at first. I had to find out ways how to get myself involved with the local food spots. I can say that once my friends and family and just people realized how serious I was everything started going more smoothly.

Don’t get me wrong, it still can be rough, but it is not as rough as it was within the first 10 months of doing this.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a content creator. I am known for going to small family-owned and local restaurants in any community to create content to make sure that people inside and outside of the community are aware and supported. I have also been an educator in north Minneapolis for eight years.

I am most proud of the love you have grown for me through this journey. My authenticity sets me apart from others because it’s how I make sure I approach everything. I’m always myself.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Authenticity has played a big part in why I’ve been able to come so far. It’s the most important because that’s how I do my best to approach everything, from my videos to all of my relationships.
