Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Flom.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started college but I didn’t finish. I didn’t love school the way that I loved photography. And as I started getting busier (mostly photographing seniors and weddings), I realized that if I wanted to make this a career out of this and really put my all into it, I couldn’t also be a full time student. So I dropped out of college and never looked back!
I continued building my business, shooting up to 50 weddings one year. I moved to Nashville for years and then back to Minneapolis. Changing markets can be tricky but thankfully my clients have always referred me to their friends and family. I love the quote that goes ‘people may forget what you said, but they will always remember how you make them feel’ and have created a business model based on that philosophy. And now I get to travel the world photographing people in love. I feel very blessed!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think anyone’s had a truly smooth road. I think being hopeful when it’s hard means that you can make it through difficult times. The advice I can give someone who is experiencing something difficult is this: if you can work harder than anyone else, you will succeed. Build your business by treating every client well. And if you are swamped and feeling burnt out, outsource. Hire a team. And honestly, my biggest source of hope comes from God so even when it feels impossible, I know it’s not impossible for Him.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in high end wedding photography. I have been photographing weddings for over 12 years now, and have loved it since day one. I have photographed over 425 weddings, and counting. I am proud of my client relations. I love being able to connect with couples, and capturing genuine moments on a wedding day, that will be able to last a lifetime for them.
How do you think about happiness?
Ultimately the relationships in my life make me happy. I have the best family and friends and we create amazing memories together – hosting parties, traveling, movie nights, you name it. Plus, I literally have the best job in the world and my clients make my days so much fun! Also, you can find me every year at the Mary’s Cookie Stand at the Minnesota State Fair. That might be the happiest place on earth. 😉
