Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Mozey.
Hi Jeff, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Back in high school I took a photography class, then when it was time to move on to college it was either graphic design or photography. I ended up going with photography because I didn’t want to take the required math course that went along with graphic design. It was as simple as that! I enjoyed photography but during the next few years I really fell in love with the format.
During college I started doing freelance work for music publications and also started interning at a local photography studio. That’s really when I started to develop my style and skill set. I would balance going to college and then in the evenings I would drive down to Minneapolis to photograph various music performances.
Out of college I opened my own photo studio where I focused on portraits, family photos, and meeting with clients.
Today I still operate out of my photo studio and continue to work with various musical artists.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Most artists (of all kinds), will probably tell you that the road isn’t smooth and that they have various struggles. It’s no different with me. There were a few years where I considered switching careers. Some months would be great and others not so much. When you work for yourself, there’s no guaranteed paycheck week after week. You have to make it happen. Luckily I’ve always made it work out. But I understand the struggle too.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
People online mostly know me for photographing rock bands and various musicians. It’s what I love the most. But outside of music photography, I also do weddings, portraits, photo booth, aerial acrobatics, and beauty pageants in the past. Various things in the photography realm.
I’m probably most proud of my personal growth with photography and the progression I have made in the processing (editing) aspect of it. Also proud of moving forward in this career and being able to have amazing opportunities from it.
Everyone has their own style with art but I would say my style is clean and bold. I want my images to pop but I personally don’t like to throw tons of filters or effects on my images. Everything has it’s time and place but my style is a little more straightforward and honest.
I think what sets me apart just comes down to my style and eye that I have with photography. That can be said though for anybody who does any kind of art, but at the end of the day that’s what it comes down to.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I would probably say social media. For me it’s usually instagram. It’s easy to doom scroll online and come across another person on the other side of the world who is being really creative with art. It can be really inspiring.
