Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodee Wallin.
Hi Jodee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Visual Creations Photography in 2009 after having my second daughter and stepping away from my corporate career. I tried to settle into being a stay-at-home mom, but it didn’t take long to realize that I’m someone who needs to create, build, and stay busy. Photography quickly became more than something I did. It became part of who I am.
Over the years, my business grew alongside my family. As a mom of seven, my perspective on photography has always been deeply personal. My kids have been my biggest inspiration. They’ve taught me how quickly moments pass and how important it is to capture them in a meaningful way. That has shaped how I approach every session, focusing on connection, emotion, and storytelling rather than just taking photos.
There were seasons where photography was more of a side income or even just a creative outlet. At one point, I even went back to school and finished another degree, thinking I might step away from photography entirely.
But by 2021, everything shifted. Instead of shifting away from photography, I went all in.
When my husband was seriously injured and temporarily lost the ability to walk, our family faced a major turning point. That experience pushed me to fully commit to my business, not just as a passion, but as something I could rely on to support my family. Since then, Visual Creations Photography has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of. What started as a creative outlet has become a full-time business built on connection, storytelling, and capturing meaningful moments for others.
Photography isn’t just what I do. It’s how I preserve the moments that matter most, inspired by the life I live with my own family.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my biggest challenges is balancing motherhood while running a full studio in an increasingly saturated industry. When I first started, there were only a few big-box studios, and when they closed, I became one of the only photographers in my area specializing in fine art newborn and maternity portraits. As the market shifted, with another new photographer appearing every other day, I had to adapt and redefine my approach.
At the same time, I’m raising a busy family. With kids in multiple sports and activities, many days I’m living out of my car, going from the studio to a sunset session in between practices.
That lifestyle has pushed me to clearly define who I am as an artist and focus on creating a meaningful, experience-driven service rather than competing on price. I’m constantly working to balance delivering value, staying accessible for families, and building a business that supports my family.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a portrait photographer specializing in maternity and newborn photography, with a focus on creating bold, emotive, fine art imagery. While those sessions are the foundation of my work, I also thrive on creative challenges that push me outside of my comfort zone. Commercial work and destination weddings have become some of my favorites, and my work has taken me across the globe as an international photographer.
What sets me apart is my approach to both the art and the experience. I hand edit every image because I genuinely enjoy the process and believe it makes a difference in the final result. I’m also proud to offer printed artwork in a time when many photographers have shifted to digital only galleries. For me, it’s about creating something tangible. Something my clients can hold onto and display in their homes for years to come.
I’m most proud of building a business that blends creativity with intention, where every session is designed to be meaningful, personal, and lasting.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories are of summer. I grew up riding my bike all over town, stopping at the local root beer stand, biking to the pool, and participating in the summer library reading program. I remember renting movies from the laundromat and spending entire days outside without a schedule.
It’s hard to pick just one moment, but those simple, carefree summer days are what stand out the most.
