Conversations with John Dvorak

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Dvorak.

Hi John, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Gradience started in the Fall of 2019 when we were freshmen at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Three of us (John, Ford and Tom) met in our dorms on campus and starting playing music together. We signed up for the talent show that fall and that’s where we met our fourth member Darian, who was also performing a solo set of his own. From there we asked him to join the band and Gradience was Born.
Shortly after we were fully formed, we played at the MSUM Battle of the Bands that next semester in February 2020. It was then only a few weeks from there that we were separated from each other and sent home from campus because of COVID 19.
We reconvened that next semester in Spring of 2020 and started working on songs. We eventually wrote and recorded our first album ‘THE CALL’ in 2021 in our Moorhead,, MN apartment. ‘THE CALL’ Came out in 2022.

After spending a few years in Moorhead, we decided that the next big step was to move to the Twin Cities. We finally found our sound and were currently recording our newest album ‘Come What May’! With the move we had to finish recording the album once we got settled down in the Twin Cities. Our original drummer Tom stayed in Moorhead for other bands he was in, but would still come down to record songs, some music videos and play shows with us until we found his replacement.

Darian had a childhood best friend living in St Paul, that he knew played drums. He sent a video audition to us and that is when we met Trevor.

Soon after Trevor joined on drums, we released the album ‘Come What May’ on April 25th 2025 and did a few shows in support. We also started work on a music video for our song ‘On A Roll’ that will release in Summer 2025. We continue to play shows in the Twin Cities!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part we have been on a nice and steady pace, but there have definitely been struggles. The biggest struggle was right away in our career when we got separated from each other when COVID hit. Not being sure if we were going to be able to make music and being hundreds of miles apart from each other was worrisome.
Other than that the only other slight struggle we had was with the move and searching for a new drummer. Luckily we found Trevor right away while our original drummer Tom was still helping us out until then.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an original Hard Rock Band!
We all have very different inspirations but also enough overlap that allows us to create a unique, original sound, that has tones from many eras of rock and metal. On top of creating new music, we also have very energetic shows/performances. It is our goal to make every show fun for everyone in attendance!

What’s next?
Our plans are to continue making music and hopefully grow here in the Twin Cities! We would like to eventually play iconic venues like First Avenue and expand out to touring the United States and maybe even Globally!
