Today we’d like to introduce you to John King
Hi John, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We like to joke Pulltab Sports was started when the world’s two oldest entrepreneurs, John King and Tom Garrity, decided to start a sports and entertainment company at the height of a global pandemic. What might have seemed like a crazy idea at the time, is still here 4 years later and is only growing. Pulltab Sports is rooted in the idea of “flyover state of mind” as we cover sports and entertainment in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas. Anywhere you can get a good Bloody Mary and rip some actual cardboard pulltabs, we want to become your new favorite website, podcast, social follow, and more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a startup is always challenging. Early on we were doing a lot more agency work. And we still enjoy doing agency work for great clients like the Minnesota Wild and their “Not Weird. Wild.” campaign. But, as a whole, content is easier to monetize, has higher margins, and is what people really want to see more scrolling on their phones than advertising. Over time, we’ve been able to migrate more of our business to the content side. And with some of our best clients, like the Wild, we’re able to make advertising that’s entertaining enough to feel more like content than an ad, as well as helping them with their official podcast, etc.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We take a lot of our cues with “flyover state of mind” from the annual high school hockey all hockey hair team which we also make. We like to create ideas without enemies, that are never mean spirited or political. We want to make content that can make your grandma laugh, and your 14-year old would still want to share because he or she thinks it’s cool.
