Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Hasnik.
Hi Josie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started writing music during the pandemic, then took to the stages of open mics and coffee shops as soon as quarantine lifted. I soon got to recording my debut album Where Could We Go? and had a release show for it at KJ’s hideaway, which sadly closed. I continued to play more shows, mostly solo, and released a two-song EP or proper single titled Out to Sea. About one year later I released my second album Weekends In Purgatory, which had its own release show at IceHouse, and I began playing most of my shows with a full band. Since then I have started attending University of Wisconsin – Madison, where I’ve continued playing music, and I try and play in the twin cities when I get the chance to come back from school.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started out I had terrible stage fright; I could barely get out two words between songs in the entire set. But as I played more and more, I gained a lot of confidence, and with all that practice being on stage, I’m rarely ever nervous anymore. Right now, my biggest obstacle is trying to maintain my standing as a musician in two places at once: Madison and home. But overall, it has been going pretty well.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer/songwriter who loves to tell stories through music. The whole reason I started writing was because I loved the creative aspect of writing, but didn’t have the patience for writing entire novels. Storytelling through songs is unique because you can be as vague or specific as you want to be without ever having to get into the logistics of the world you’ve made; it’s all about what it represents, and the music is what makes the feeling of it come to life. Whether it’s real life or fiction, the words and sounds are there to transport you to the world of the song in a concise yet moving way.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
