Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaleb Williams.
Hi, Kaleb. We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
To sum up one’s journey in a few sentences is no small task, but I will give it my best shot. The story starts about 10 years ago, amidst the resurgence of folk music and suspenders, the light of Harbor & Home was conceived. It burst like a little soda bubble onto the unsuspecting Minnesota music scene. A love of live performance, catchy melodies, and our passion for warm, organic acoustic music sparked our music. Something inside me tingled for years until I was willing to leap into the uncharted waters of the music industry. I attribute many of my career successes to my wonderfully persistent friends, who hounded me to start creating and performing music. If anyone is reading this, I hope you know my gratitude. I began as a naive youth who was fiery and headstrong, convinced that I would be counted among the greats. Now, I have grown into a resilient and purpose-driven man, hoping that what I do will positively impact the world. Multitudes of mistakes have been made over the years, but I have learned from each setback and found myself further down the road than I could have expected or dreamed of. From singing songs in my bedroom to singing favorites in front of thousands, the road has winded around like a pinwheel, and all I can do is hang on and enjoy the ride.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been anything but smooth for most of my career. Many highs and lows mark the journey that I have been on through the years. We’ve seen our share of troubles, from stolen trailers and equipment to vehicles breaking down on the road or rooms filled with empty air. The seemingly draining pressure is possibly what fuels the fire inside us. Some of our best memories are marked with momentary stresses that, at the time, feel overwhelming and later bear the fruit of joy and laughter. My favorite roadside memory is on a tour through North and South Carolina, where our Van broke down just before the mouth of a mountain’s tunnel carrying a long 7′ x 20′ trailer behind it. Our serpentine belt decided to pop down the hill, and we found ourselves stranded until the local towing company came to the rescue. We were towed 50 miles to Asheville, NC, where we found a Chevy dealer and an enterprise truck dealer flanking a local street that also housed not only our hotel for the night but also our long overdue dinner at Zaxby’s. The weight of the stress and worry felt like it may crush us in the moment, but I now realize that it was training for the future as we would need to grow thick skin for the journey ahead.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Harbor & Home is a band from Minneapolis, MN, that has been touring the country for the past 10 years. A chaotic mix of folk, rock, country, and soul, the unique sound that is distinctly H&H reaches a fanbase that spans generations. We are best known for our song, ‘Summer Lover,’ which debuted in 2014 on the first of many musical compilations by the band. Our path has been marked by our independence from the record labels who have come knocking, and we have learned from the grassroots approach to our music’s promotion and touring. We love catchy melodies and vocal performances. These two key attributes envelope not only our recorded music but our live performances as well.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any essential lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Life is short and fragile; you never know your time. Ensure every minute you’ve been given is spent on bettering the world around you. Learn to put others before yourself and love from a truly selfless heart. Be a good listener, not intending to craft the best response, but seek to understand with love, even in disagreement. Hold on to those you Love.
