Conversations with Karl Herber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karl Herber

Karl, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My background is in fine art. I spent some very formative time in Europe as part of my education. I have worked in professional photography in various capacities for over thirty years, but art was always at the core. I also work as digital capture technician, a retoucher, and a custom fine art printer. Printing, photography, art, image editing, enhancement, archival restoration and more. If your problem involves art or a photograph, I can help. My studio is in the 1908 South Minneapolis home I share with my wife, Rya Priede, who does custom picture framing. Together, we provide custom personalized art services unavailable anywhere else, or at least not under one roof, in the home of two artists, filled with light and art and where there’s almost always cake.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth, but life is good. Every artist must embrace and accept the challenges and practical realities of a committed creative life. Business patterns have always been unpredictable yet at times very rewarding. A working creative needs to understand and appreciate the pros and cons of living a life outside of the typical 9-5 M-F parameters. Even though I’ve been doing this for many years, the uncertainty can often be challenging, yet I take great satisfaction looking back and reflecting on the life we have. The number of people who don’t like your work will always outnumber those who do, so rejection is a big part of the job.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer at heart, and I love working with images. Purity has long been a consistent theme in my work. I try to refine that which stimulates me in the outside world down to its essence. This could be a minimal waterscape, a flower, a gradient of light or a digital artifact. If that doesn’t make sense, don’t worry, I don’t understand a lot of my work either, but that’s a part of what intrigues me.
I’m both an artist and a technician. To take a creative problem and get it out into the world is a big part of what I do in terms of working with other creatives on photo shoots. Artists aren’t always known for their comfort with computers and technical processes like printing.
“Calm, Superior,” is one of my all-time favorite pieces. About as simple and pure as it gets. So, when someone wants it for their own home, it makes me very proud.
Another thing that makes me proud is when I solve a challenging problem for another artist that allows them to realize their vision.

What are your plans for the future?
We’re planning a trip to Spain in May to visit our daughter. While we’ve both spent significant time in Europe, we’ve never been to Spain, so we’re both looking forward to a lot of great new experiences.
I’ve also been re-photographing old print ephemera – old books, old photos and illustrations. Not sure where that will lead, but that’s the fun part.

Pricing:

  • Every project is different, so commodity pricing isn’t applicable. I factor in volume complexity and deadline when estimating projects. For my artwork, individual prints start at $300 and go up based on size and nature of the work.
