Conversations with Lissa Scotland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lissa Scotland.

Hi Lissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began painting in my early twenties as a way of dealing with crippling anxiety. Getting lost in the process, and expressing myself with paint became my therapy. Creating became my solace. My mom had a huge influence on me, as she is a painter herself. In the early years, we would paint alongside each other in a downtown Omaha studio. She is still one of the biggest supporters on my work.

As I grew older and moved around, I always had my paints with me to keep me company. After marrying and having 2 daughters, the time to create dwindled but my passion for it never did. These past few years, after moving to Duluth, Minnesota, and the kiddos growing up, I have been able to dive right back into my art. I paint daily in my home studio and couldn’t be happier with where I am at.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The only struggle I did have is one of courage and self-doubt. As I have aged, I have become self-confident in my work and myself. I don’t need people to like me or my paintings. What makes me the happiest is how brave and I have become through my artistic practice.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work with acrylic paint on canvas. Currently, I am focused on abstract florals. I use many layers of expressive bright and colorful paint, charcoal, mark making, to get emotion onto the canvas. After layering, I solve the puzzle and bring the piece together through a botanical form. I have always been curious about what makes something “beautiful” and have found that the more messy/chaotic/raw the layers are on my piece, the more interesting and “beautiful’ it becomes.

I call my process a “Beautiful Mess”.

Any big plans?
I look forward to showing you my work in Minnesota! I am working on an art show for next Spring in Duluth. Currently, I am using Instagram as a platform to get my paintings into collectors’ hands. I have been busy with several commission pieces, and I also love donating my work to raise money for great causes.
